Did the biannual auto swapmeet this past weekend with expectations of finding numerous good deals on saws & such needing a new home. Ironically, the day before I checked the Craigslist ads for the area as it's about an hour & 20 from home and found a guy selling several old gas engines, one of which was the XLS pump. A bit of texting back & forth, he was only looking for $25.- for it and was roughly 4 miles from the swapmeet I was going to be at. He said it runs but the fuel line was gone so couldn't test it. Picked it up on my way in and started the day off happy! The irony being I didn't buy any of the saws I found at the swapmeet... Everybody there was selling antiques.
It's in pretty good shape. Clean, dry & spotless fuel tank. Good compression. Only thing I don't like is the white plastic fuel tank cap. Not sure if it was original or a replacement but of course Leon [had] a NOS original that is on the way. Since getting back I haven't even had a chance to put fuel down the carb but the guy said somebody gave it to him years ago and he never used it. Thinking things may be pretty dry in there and want to get a bit of oil inside before I try to run it at all.

Pump looks good. As simple as they are, shouldn't need much to put it in running shape. The warning on the inlet says it all, fill the pump with water before starting. The seals should not be run dry. Plan on making sausage with that nice press? Don't see many made of cast iron these days.

Any idea what the -4A stands for?

The sausage maker is a different machine entirely but I leave that up to my local meat farm. As far as I know, it was made as a fruit press for grapes, apples etc. I've been looking for one for a long time and had been in process of converting an old pipe vise into one, to use for making herbal medicines. I've seen them in illustrations of old medicinal texts to they were probably in use for that too, back before the common use of the pharmaceutical poisons.
Hopefully I can find an hour to put a fuel line on the pump, lube it up and give it a go. Looks to have seen little use and been well taken care of. I'm hopeful it's going to need very little. Just have to find some hose for it.

That plastic plug is to keep you from putting fuel in there! There never was a fuel cap to prevent confusion, only fuel in the steel add on tank, to give more run time.
By the way, I hate you for getting such a deal. I don't know why I told you about the plug, I guess I lost my mind when you said "$25".

No, you really hate me because of the other pump you still lust after... Ever get yours running by the way?
The plastic cap I'm talking about is the one on the add on tank.

I actually felt bad giving him only $25 for it when he texted me back what he wanted. Figured if it ran and/or if he showed up in a beat up old car, looked like he needed the cash, I'd give him more. He pulled up in a relatively new truck, the fuel line wasn't on it and he said somebody gave it to him, so I accepted the good fortune. Did find a Sears generator, 1200watt, at the swapmeet. Guy only wanted $50.- for it but I'm trying to limit the number of heavy things I'll be moving north when I get out of here. Couldn't tell who actually made it. The press. IMG_8318 by Kyle, on Flickr

So I was poking around on the net, just looking for info on the pump & found another picture with the same white plastic cap on the outboard fuel tank... Maybe a standard aftermarket replacement cap? Or the point where Homelite started a bit of cost cutting? Don't know, but it's getting replaced anyway. Leon should be knocking on my door any day now with the NOS replacement metal one. (If any of you were wondering why he hasn't posted recently, he's making the drive from Oregon to Jersey...) Damn dedicated that guy!

So, Leon came and left the other day without even coming up for a beer... Still, fastest shipping in North America and the red metal cap looks much better on that fuel tank. Had a bit of time last night to start poking around on this thing, looking at getting the new fuel line on it. Bit of a different animal since it's coming from the auxiliary fuel tank. Think I'm going to find a proper grommet for the line to pass through rather than the glob of orange RTV that was on there. Pulled the drain plug at the bottom of the pump and there is a mess of rodent debris needing to be flushed out. Went to pull the spark plug to get a look at the cylinder and get some oil in there prior to start up and the plug boot didn't want to let go. The boot was a bit dry rotted and the wire spring was rusted solid to the top of the plug. I guess I'm one of the few that uses dielectric grease in spark plug boots. Plug itself came out easy and looks brand new on the other end. Cylinder looks nice from that perspective but gave it a yank and there's no spark. Looked inside the recoil and there is the Prestolite blue coil of despair. I have a few spare Wico or Phelon flywheels & coils for this engine so thinking I'll just swap it out if I can. Any need to know items there?
With a little luck, I'll put in a few hours this weekend and hear it purr in the next few days.

Don't despair just yet. The other parts should work just fine, only think I know of is match flywheel and module, otherwise mechanically they interchange.

Can't help on a manual but Leon's site has a few product catalogs, which have some basic specs.
