Not sure when it happened, but I happened to take a closer look at my 990 Homelite hanging from the rafters and saw that the clear coat on all the Red paint crinkled! And only on the red to which baffles me, but makes me happy so I won't have to repaint the whole damn saw. Yeah I'm pissed and confused. So user beware......many months later the 2k clear on the dupli color red may crinkle for no reason at all. Saw stored dry never ran just sitting there. Green, silver, and black parts perfectly fine....just all red parts. I'll get some pictures tomorrow evening.

I had a similar problem happen on a C-9 that I painted. It was like 6 months after completion I noticed that all the clear had turned kinda rough. The recoil housing and the cylinder shield remained nice and smooth. The only thing that I think of is that contaminants started to work their way out of the magnesium. The reason I say this is because I think the 2 pieces on my saw that didn't have the problem are made of aluminum. I work in a body shop so I asked the PPG rep about it and he said magnesium can be crap shoot to refinish. It is porous and can absorb years of oil and grime. I had repainted 2 saws prior to this one using the same methods and products and they look fine. Go figure. I have been painting cars for the last 30 years and every once in a while something while go wrong that makes you want to pull your hair out. Maybe that's why I don't have much hair left! I am curious on your saw if the parts that didn't react are aluminum? Or did you use a different kind of paint on those parts? One other thing to consider is that a 2K clear (I assume this is a clear mixed with urethane catalyst) might have a lot stronger solvents than the duplicolor and can attack the color. I would think it would have done it right away though if that were the case. Fortunately on my saw, you have to get close to see the problem so I'm going to leave it be unless the paint starts to come off. Still frustrating though.

That's good to know, unfortunately No.....the green, silver, and black are also magnesium. All primer was dupli color, paint was duplicolor, and clear was 2k spray max which has been used by many members here with no issues. I'm just baffled it took so long! I restored that saw spring of last year! It happened while I was up north over this winter......can't blame cold cause the rest of the paint is fine.

That's what my C-9 did. I painted it in January of 2018 and was going to display it at a power show over labor day. That's when I noticed it. There are so many variables that can mess up a paint job. Sometimes hard to diagnose.

Was it the Dupli-Color Engine Enamel that was used ? Dupli color GM perfect match Only the "Victory Red" was Dupli-Color Perfect Match ? ... That may be the cause since it's an acrylic lacquer. The silver, black, are enamel... and maybe green( can't tell from the pictures of the cans in your 990-G build thread ) Weird that it would take this long to develop a reaction..

Damn TJ, that sucks! When we get together I'll bring you a can of the primer I'm using...it's made by the same company that makes the 2K. It really seems to bond to and seal up the magnesium well.

Yep, it's GM victory red....others have used it with no issues yet so I don't think that's why. Could be though.

Thanks man! I'm gonna make this a late summer or fall project I think. Got a couple saws I want to have running soon so I'm gonna focus on them. lol
