My 550 was running great and then suddenly died, I was not able to get it restarted. My thought is to check the transformer (part A-12299-A or ignition module 12669-A)with the multi meter but I'm not sure what numbers I'm looking for. Any help on numbers or tips on what else to check?

Check spark plug first? Saw still have compression? Suddenly dying is usually only one of 3 things, no fuel, no spark, or loss of compression.

Compression is at 115, I bought a new spark plug and will give it a try.

I believe the compression being at 115 is your answer. That's just too low for a 550 to be able to fire anymore.I think you're in need of new rings at the least. Ed

You can check the coil with a little hill-billy trick I picked up from a Chainsawguy video. Take the transformer off and spark plug out. Wet two fingers and place one on each contact. Crank the saw over (preferably with a variable speed drill) and you should feel a tickle of current. This won't blast you like a car ignition, but you should be able to feel something.
If this tests good, you likely have a bad transformer. 115PSI is pretty low for a 550, but it should at least pop on a prime. Have you tried squirting a bit of oil in the cylinder to see if the reading comes up at all?

The range for 550's is 125-155. A little low but enough to run. Now on a different saw, like a 450, 115 would be really low....
