I have been searching coast to coast for an oil pump for my saw for about 2 weeks now and to no avail, part number HM-A00789. I have a Homelite 540 with the wrap-around handle and dual claw spikes. I bought it at an estate sale 3 years ago and it definitely has put in a lot of work, but it runs great even for being a bit ugly. Unfortunately, I only have myself to blame for the predicament I am in. The saw stopped pumping oil or so I thought and I unscrewed the oil pump shaft retaining screw on top of the pump then back in while the saw was running. This caused the oil pump shaft to crack into 2 pieces meanwhile stripping and melting the worm gear. After all that, when I tore into the saw to investigate the reason the saw stopped pumping oil to find that the oil line cracked off the top of the tank from being extremely brittle. I had someone tell me that an oil pump from an 8800 would work however after removing my oil pump and looking at pictures of the 8800 oil pump, I don't believe that they have the same bolt pattern but I could be wrong. The internal oil pump shaft and the worm gear are toast.
I am hoping possibly someone might know someone that has a replacement or an old usable oil pump on a parts saw that may consider parting with it. Also I have not seen any replacement air filters. Anyhow, maybe someone will see this and respond before I ditch the ol beast and go buy a new replacement.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the House of Homelite!
Sounds like you are about to find the joy of old Homelites. Getting it going again when you thought you would have to scrap it I mean.
I am afraid I cannot help you, other than to encourage you to hang in there a little while yet. Someone who CAN help you will be along any time and steer you in the right direction.
Stick around, it gets better!

The worm gear is the same, but the pump is different. I don't know of any source for one either at the moment, but I will be on the lookout.

The part number is A-00789 and on Leon's website he has a used pump from an 8800 with the same part number for sale. Might check it out.

I talked with one of my parts suppliers yesterday,Mr Bob Johnson,& he said he didn't know if he had one or not without the part #.He suggested Ray Parrish of Parrish Implement in Brandenburg,Ky.Phone # 502-228-1482.I've dealt with Ray recently & he's a pretty good guy to deal with.Kinda high pressure salesmanship though.I know he has at least 9 tractor trailer loads of old obsolete chainsaw parts. The part number for a 540 oil pump is A00789. I have had good luck with Ray on finding parts for my old Bunton push mower.

Thank you for the responses. I have the Homelite numbers for the parts I am looking for: HM-A00789 (oil pump), HM-59926 (felt seal), HM-A00357 (worm gear & bearing), HM-A97303 (air filter), HM-A57650A (on-off switch). I put in a call to Ray @ Parrish Implements and I am awaiting a return call. I am hoping he can help me or steer me to someone who can. -Matt

Good to hear you're making some progress on this.I'm sure Ray will have what you need.I have a 540 myself that I picked up just over a yr.ago,It has a scored piston, not sure about the cylinder yet.It looks good on the exhaust side, but I've been told that ther scoring,if any, will be on the intake side.Good luck on your saw! Indoor water features in the school apartments are a bad thing, especially at night! The last one was a young guy trying to hang something in the bathroom...his stud finder recognized the CPVC sprinkler pipe as a stud and he drilled right into the bastard. Of course it was an upstairs bathroom! The pump I have on the website now is from an 8800 and the description had an error where I had failed to put the 8800 part# in. I've corrected that now. I had always assumed that these pumps would interchange, but looking at the pictures I have of both and the saw IPL's, I see that is not correct. The worm gear is the same as Greg noted, but the 540 pump uses a gasket and has a wider flange. The 8800 has no gasket and a narrower flange. Here are the best pictures I have on file for both: Homelite 8800 Oil PumpHomelite 540 Oil Pump (a) Homelite 540 Oil Pump (b)

The 00789 has "321" on it, is that an oil volume adjustment?

Without the help of the members here on HOH I wouldn't have been able to repair my saw. Thank you to everyone for your input and help. I was able to get the parts I needed from Mr. Bob Johnson to get my 540 pumping oil again. I received my parts Saturday. Yesterday morning I got my saw back together and everything worked great. I am glad I stuck around here, just when I thought my saw's life was coming to a dismal end and would have bury it at my dump, I got the help I was searching for. I am glad to be able to get more use out of it. There is definitely a wealth of knowledge here in all of the members and a willingness to help find solutions to any problem. Thank you all again!

I have inherited a Homelite 540 with a 32” bar from my late brother a couple months ago and would like very much to restore it! It didn’t run but after replacing a few parts as well as oil and gas lines it now runs like a champ. As a matter of fact this thing is an animal! I’ve been reading the above articles on the other guy with the 540 and have emailed Leon’s and called Ray Parrish and Randy’s with no luck in finding an oil pump I see the part number is A-00789 and Mr. Parrish verified that it is the correct number. The pump I have is the same as the last picture posted above. However there is a number on the side of my pump 00178. Is there any possibility that you folks could help me to get this saw oiling again? Guy S

Welcome to the House of Homelite.
Sounds like you have been around the barn already, but, hang in there a while longer. I cannot help you but there are certainly folks here who can.
That is a good saw and worth your time. You will be pleased with it when it is repaired.
