Went to a big gun auction Saturday. I collect Savage 1899's. Savage 1899 rifles in Winchester calibers are a bit rare and command a premium. Saddle Ring Carbines are pretty rare too, and bring a premium. They had the most pristine one I have ever seen, in 30-30. This is an 1899F, SRC, made in 1912. I had $1600 on me, and when bidding hit $1500 I told my buddy I was done. He slid me $1000 dollars and said, "Keep going, you will never see a nicer one". Got it for $2300. I spent the next two days documenting it. It has a replacement Ring on it. Everything else is 100% original and unrestored. Has an upgraded Savage model 21 rear sight, standard Rocky Mountain Knife Blade front, original pre WWI Dark mirror blue, and dark finish on the wood. No dents or scratches on the wood. No finger prints or fading on the blue. The color case on the lever is gone, but that fades out even in a safe with climate control. i'm a happy camper, Joe.

Very, very nice. And a dam good friend too.
Only one problem. Is it so pristine that you won't shoot it? I never minded getting the rare & pristine beauty queens but I draw the line at never using it for what it was intended unless it's condition requires it be retired.
If I get pulled away from playing with the saws this winter, it's because I plan on finally starting that Pennsylvania Long Rifle I've been planning on building. Got the lock and a raw barrel a year ago, everything else will come from scratch. Too many hobbies not enough time.

First thing I did when we got back to the farm was shoot it. A couple days ago, my neighbor to the farm in WV, called and said the next time we come up, bring a gun. Always do anyway. He had a bear kill a couple of his sheep. DNR gave him a Bear Damage Tag. I plan on taking the Saddle Ring Carbine. Figure 30-30 is a traditional Black Bear round. I've got Savages in all of the Savage calibers, but I think I'd like to take a bear with this one. As for condition, it is definitely safe queen quality, and if it's so much as foggy out, it will stay in. But, if I get a clear sunny day, it can come out and play.

That is an incredible rifle and to have come that long and remain in that condition is also great. With absolutely no intention of hijacking the thread but I too believe it will be no saws for me for awhile. Not thanks to a gun though...errr...well anyway my wife actually came about one of these the other day so yea probably taking a break from saws for a bit. I do still have a supers xl 925 to come in and I have two bars I want to find but that might be it for awhile. www.flickr.com/photos/138659658@N05/shares/7Z5rq6
