Some time back ran across a bulk buy of XL-12 SXLAO parts and some others apparently. There was everything from pistons, pins, cylinders, complete recoil assemblies mufflers and so on. Anyway I've used some of the parts, attempted to use one of the cylinders but with no luck and that was a while back. Today I grabbed that cylinder again to try on another SXLAO as that is what it was supposed to be for. Same as before the piston and rings fit as they should it goes down on the studs then stops about 1/4" from seating against the gasket. I didn't spend much time before just a few quick looks and thought maybe the saw I was working on then was a much older model than the cylinder as some of the parts that came with the cylinder were from 90's model saws. Anyway again today same thing. I measured the base of the cylinder that seats in the crankcase and its .05 larger diameter. everything else measures the same. Then much like these red wasps around here bam it hit me from out of nowhere. One noticeable difference that I can't believe I didn't see before. This cylinder has only 2 muffler bolt holes instead of 3. That's really the only difference I see. What other saw could this be from? In the lot of parts that it came with were numerous bars as well. One of the bars faintly in yellow paint pen was written "homelight 330". Would it be that close to a SXLAO?

A Homelite 330 has a clamshell engine, so that is probably not where the cylinder came from. Some of the older Super XLs that had stack mufflers or early box style mufflers may not have had the third hole. I don't know why it won't fit the crankcase, but maybe the dowel pin and non-dowel pin crankcases had different cylinder opening diameters.

SXL bore 1 13/16. XL12 bore 1 3/4.

It’s definitely the super xl bore. I have a couple of super XL pistons and XL 12 pistons. The super XL piston fits as it should

Cylinder part numbers 58706-B1 and A-69714 are for the Super XL Automatic, but maybe you have a cylinder for an XL Automatic, part number 58706-3. An XL Automatic cylinder would probably only have two muffler bolt holes.

Here are some pics. I wondered if different Super XL's had different cylinders. I believe there was a thread recently that I read that the difference in part numbers for the SXLAO cylinders was the updated part number included a gasket where the old part number did not. I believe this was changed due to people changing the cylinder and not the gasket. www.flickr.com/photos/138659658@N05/shares/bs2y03

The cylinder fins on the 3 hole cylinder are cut away to allow access to the flywheel side cylinder nuts, but the 2 hole muffler has solid fins like on the muffler side. The holes for the muffler on the 2 hole cylinder look countersunk, and it also has a thinner cylinder mounting flange, and the fins on the tops of the cylinders are slightly different, but other than that they look the same.

that's what I thought. From the base of the flange to the bottom of the cylinder measures the same on both. The outer diameter below the flange did measure about .05 or .06 larger which I wouldn't think would be a lot. None the less both of the Super XL's I tried to put it on I experienced the same issue, it just wouldn't seat, leaving about a 3/16' to 1/4" gap at the flange. One of the saws I tried to put it on I believe was a 1975 and the other was produced in 1984 I think I will have to double check the '80 one

I looked at the saw I have and as much as I could see it looked the same.

Maybe xl 100 series cylinder? I know the pistons interchange

Maybe xl 100 series cylinder? I know the pistons interchange That would explain why it only has two holes for the muffler, and the crankcase on an XL-100 might be different to accept the gear case, which could be why the cylinder doesn't fit Super XL crankcases.

I’ve never seen an XL 100 series in person lol but I would lean towards that being more plausible. Reason I say that is I just don’t see the addition of the third bolt changing the fit into the crankcase. Piston fits perfectly bolt pattern is the same on the crankcase. I kinda felt from the beginning that it was for a different model I just wasn’t sure which model might have been that close

Maybe xl 100 series cylinder? I know the pistons interchange Not all XL100 series saws are the same bore as the SXL's. Also the exhaust port on the 100 series were it meets the muffler is slanted not square cornered like the SXL's. Also most if not all 100 series saws have a decompression valve.

The XL 101, 102, etc. cylinders are very different from a Super XL, and from your pictures I don't think that is what you have. The XL-100 circular saw cylinder is probably very close to a Super XL, but I do not have a parts list to check the crankcase and cylinder part numbers between the XL-100 and Super XL.

He'll have to measure the stepped shoulder at the bottom of the cylinders for comparison that is probably the difference.

I think your cylinder may be from a Poulan 400, 361, or a similar clone of the Super XL. Look at these Poulan cylinders on eBay, they look very similar to yours: Poulan 361 cylinder Poulan 400
