I need a new cylinder for my Homelite Super XL Automatic, the cylinder currently on it is cracked. The cylinder has "58706-B" cast into it and the bore measures 1 and 13/16". I may be able to get a used cylinder from a later year model Super XL, but I would like to make sure it will fit the piston currently in my saw. The part number of the piston in my saw is 59241-1A. Looking at the parts diagrams, part numbers 58706-B1 and A-69714 are both cylinders for the Super XL. Are these cylinders interchangeable?
Thank you

I'm not even close to the the expert on this, but Undee77, onlyhomelites, and sweepleader will correct me and can add a lot more accurate info. The numbers stamped on many Homelite parts are not always the part numbers listed in the Parts Manuals. Suffice it to say that most cylinders and pistons for the SXL Autos for many years will/should work, but there may be a bevy of different stampings on the parts and part numbers in the manuals, so much so that that they can even be used on XL-12 saws to give added power.

The different part #'s stem from the change in the late 60's or early 70's where a cylinder gasket was included with a new cylinder...too many techs were replacing a cylinder and using the old gasket. Any Super XL cylinder will fit and as oologoahan noted, the Super Xl cylinder & piston can also be used on an XL-12.

Thank you for the information, Oologahan and Onlyhomelites. I will probably be getting a used cylinder for this saw soon.
I have a couple more questions, are the earlier (58688-A and 58308-A) and later (12282-A and 58308-B) Super XL crankshaft seals interchangeable, and is the stator gasket (part number 59538) used on all year models of Super XLs with Wico point ignition?
Thank you

The later seals are more durable and in the case of the 12282-A, I believe it also has a double lip. The 59538 gasket appears in the IPL's for all the Wico points ignitions.

This might seem obvious to most of us but if you use a SXL cylinder make sure you are using a SXL piston. Same for the XL12 parts. Even though you can use either set up, the bore is a different size between the two. Another thing is the spark plugs are different between the two.
