I was looking at primers, self etching, and I have found that they are priced everywhere from $4 to $25. To be that much price difference, is one any better than the other or is it more to some than just self etching?

You don't need a self etching primer, you need to clean the magnesium. The dirt on AND in the magnesium will cause a problem with any primer. Once the metal is clean, then I would use a automotive type sanding/filler primer. Spray a couple of light coats and sand off leaving the primer to fill the imperfections. Magnesium does not need a full coat of primer if it is cleaned with a concentrated sodium phosphate cleaner like TSP and rinsed off with water. I let it air dry. If you blow dry it, any dirt or residue on the surface will be forced back into the metal. The primer will encapsulate the residue on the surface and it will sand off, then use a beeswax tack cloth to remove sanding dust, again compressed air only forces dust and particulates into the metal that will make for a poor bond.
