I used a high temp engine paint on the cylinder and muffler housings. I've had great luck with duplicolor engine paints holding up to heat, cold, wet, and oily elements. My GMC's v6 is over 2 years on the paint and not a chip or scuff. I figured Dupli-color high heat engine enamel would hold up. I researched the cooling aspect of this a few months back and the effects are minimal on cooling Plus the saw won't be used regularly either, on occasion when I feel like carrying that beast around. haha

I can see it getting used if the tree were to fall close to or on the truck. That would keep the carrying distance to a minimum.

I've soda blasted and aluminum-oxide blasted cylinders and they end up just a bit "rougher" than a clean factory part. You've got to be damned careful not to blast into the cylinder though. I'm sure there's many ways to protect them, but I like to stuff the bore rock-solid with newspaper and then the ports for good measure. The cylinders had some sort of anti-corrosive coating from the factory that tinted them that dull, faded bronze look. No idea what it was though. TJ I can't wait to see that saw in person next weekend! It's already looking top notch! You could brush a layer of rubber cement on the areas that you want to protect.

Been doing yard work these past few evenings, but managed to get the crank shaft bearing removed, new installed, and put back into the case. Also made a gasket for the reed block. Only thing keeping me from putting the cylinder on is a couple c-clips for the piston. The ones in there look fine, but with what happened with the 770gs I don't want to take any chances. Plus I'm trying not to work with it to much until the clear is cured up. I'm regretting not ordering the decals sooner. 001 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 002 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr

They make high heat paint up to 2000 degrees, I guess if it was run for a little while we could see, but the true test is if it was used regularly. Later saws had very little of the cylinder showing and therefore not much a need to paint them. I would have thought bead blasting them would look the same as painting I have always bead or soda blasted mine but as Scott said the painted head looks nice as well.

Do you have any more updated build photos ? Cant wait to see .. Those are the last I've done to it. Been busy with yard work these evenings. I probably won't have an update until this weekend some time as I need to get a couple c-clips for the piston before I put the rings and cylinder on. Can't wait to see here as well. haha

Looking good TJ. She's gonna be a prize when it's done. Love that metallic green.
Been following along here and there with the discussion about painting or blasting the cylinder but not too up for chiming in lately. I understand you're not planning on running it much and have to admit the painted cylinder looks pretty good but I know I wouldn't be able to paint it, just a pet peeve of mine, I'd rather have it natural and even with patina maybe. Not the only way, just my way. I was thinking about blasting it but with a non-abrasive like Walnut shell media. It will strip paint and even clean up oxidation & all but doesn't remove metal or even leave impact marks. I've used it in a tumbler to polish non-ferrous metals & it works pretty good. Wouldn't want to use it on areas to be painted but a clean & polish with the ease of blasting... I just recently got hold of some, just need to do a test.

If the paint doesn't burn off the cylinder that will be a good start. The glass bead leaves a rough sand colored surface but doesn't take metal Off....might change if you were to use extreme amounts of pressure, but coming out of the gun I think the max I'm getting is probably 90 psi and I used around 60 most of the time.

More updates for ya Scott! lol Fuel tank is mounted and new crank seals are in. Found that 1050 seals will work just fine for the pto side and seem to be more common. Just a note. The chainsawlady sold me a condenser, but I am still searching for points. Ones on there aren't To bad, but an nos set would be nice. Also got the starter cup in today....dented to hell, but has both tabs which is a plus. 002 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 003 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 004 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 005 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 006 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr
