I’m thinking there was another thread on here not too long ago where someone had the same problem buying a filter for a 35.

I’m thinking there was another thread on here not too long ago where someone had the same problem buying a filter for a 35. Same saw, different person, this one fits better than the one Will bought, just wondering if this is the right air filter cover or if the air filter tucks in at the bottom. I bought the saw for just right at twice the air filter cost.

I think I may try a Homelite 360 12225-1 filter and plug the big hole with something

See if the filter off your 360 fits the air box properly. The filter you bought for the 35 might fit a 900 series like your SXL-925 or XL-902AM.

I think I know why I got this saw cheap. There is no air filter for it. I'm going to return the 35 dollar filter and just makes something or use another filter. I thought about trying to see if my 360 cover is different or it will fit. On a side note I wonder why the 1984 35SL appendix states the filter is part number 79209 and the manual says 78209, is that my problem? I wonder if it is it because the UT 50222A takes different parts than the UT10670. In fact the the appendix would appear to show many different part numbers for the UT50222A including the engine housing, air filter, carb, and air filter cover.

The different part numbers could very well be the problem. Of course you can always resell the saw too, hint....

I failed to properly punctuate my comment. It should have read "Why, are you interested?", lol. As you can see without that comma my comment means something different.

"I think you are on to something here! I forgot that I have an exploded 35SL I bought back around Christmas...haven't had time to even look at it really, but it's the same UT# as yours. I laid a 450 filter on it and it's damn close. It's a bit too big all the way around, but this leaves a bit of room to trim and possibly get the air filter stud hole in the proper spot. The filter is ~4" wide X 4 1/2" long and the stud hole is ~ 1 5/8" to the center when measured from the throttle handle end."
That would be GREAT!, Easier than trying to plug the hole on a 360 filter. I think I could use the wifes heat sealer and a little saran wrap to recreate a new factory edge. I could test it on the piece I cut off.

Sounds good, I'll slap a new grommet in this one and send it your way Monday.

Well when I do mine, I'll trim it for the visual...but I'm impressed that it fits as well as it does. Great idea you had Oologahan!
