Picked up this at the GTG. Runs very good. Seems lightly used.

Nice score. Condition of the clutch cover decal helps determine use ( unless it’s been replaced) as the saw has to be turned on its side to refuel. Has the double spikes too.

Nice! Is it a runner,or does it need a little work? It needs nothing. It's had very little use. Nice score. Condition of the clutch cover decal helps determine use ( unless it’s been replaced) as the saw has to be turned on its side to refuel. Has the double spikes too. Thanks Greg! It's totally original. Sweet, you really made out. Both I and the guy I traded with did OK. I traded him a pristine 1983 Partner 7000 with the Partner logo 24" bar that I gassed for the first time ever about a year ago and made two cuts with. He got all of the paperwork including the original bill of sale.

Hell that made the trip worth it right there! I guess so Leon. I swore that I wasn't going to get involved with Solo Homelites but I guess things can change.

Homelite Solo and an air cooled 6 cylinder in the background, how's that for a combination! I love this forum.

Sorry whats a solo homelite? Homelite had a joint venture with Solo for the 340/290, Solo being the German saw company with such saws as the Rex and the Twin. The 340/290 were basically just rebadged Solo chainsaws. Since the 540/8800 used some German made parts, alot of people also refer to these as Solos, however there wasn't an equivalent Solo model. Some German company, very possibly Solo, but not proven, had some involvement in the 540/8800 development, but many parts on these were US made, not German. Anyway, it's a sticky topic for me since I see the 540/8800 as in a different category than the 340/290, but anyway, hope this answers your question. Dan

If you look at the gas/oil tanks on the 290 & 340 & compare them to the 540 & 8800 you'll see there's an uncanny resemblance,& then ya just gotta think that somehow Solo was involved.

For what it is worth, in my opinion the quality of the 540 & 8800 is leaps and bounds above the 290 & 340. I can't stand the construction and layout of the 290 & 340.

I agree 100% Leon. I did a rebuild thread on here sometime back, and not impressed at all with the 290/340 as far as build quality or performance. I mean, they're OK, not just bashing them, but compared to other Homelites, they're just not up to the same standards. 8800s on the other hand are VERY well built and 540s up there too. Just like the magnesium tank/handle on the 8800 better.

Dan I have a 340 that I'm intending to do an engine transplant on in the near future.I've read your old thread, but all the helpful pics are gone because of the age of the post.Is there any way you can get thoser pics up again Dan? I'm respectfully inquiring.

I've experienced this on my 8800 and 550CS. Even some of the 410's had caps that would do this. The natural tendency when there is a leak is to crank the cap down a bit harder, hence the warpage.

I'm respectfully inquiring. There was a post, I could swear here at HoH, but can't find it, with a fix for using Photobucket via third party. Not sure which browser you're using, but try to google "Photobucket third party hosting fix" and tack on your browser. I use firefox... it's been a while and I honestly can't remember, but seems like there was a setting I added in firefox to make it work. Dan
