After tearing down my XP-1000 I found that the cylinder has some rust spots down at the base at the point where the skirting starts. There's also a chip missing from the skirt that is 5/8 in.wide at the end & comes down in the shape of a U where it meets the base of the cylinder. Therefore I'm assuming that the cylinder is kaput.I don't want to spend $150 on a new one,in my opinion the saw isn't worth it.A good used one would make me happy for a good price.

Not sure what the rust spots would be since the cylinder is aluminum with a chrome or nikasil or whatever lining. Most likely it'd be rust from the rings. If so, it'll be on the surface and it'll come off. There's a bunch of posts over at AS regarding acid and abrasive cylinder cleanup. Now that chip on the bottom is another story, but, depending on where it is, it may be you could still get it to run. Yes, a replacement cylinder would be nice, but they ain't all that common, so if you get bored and want to play, ya never know.

It's not so much getting bored & wanting to play.Lol I'd like to try to save money if I could. If I can still use the old cylinder & if it'd work fine, then I'm all for cleaning up the cylinder & throwing in a new set of rings for $12-$15 & see what happens. The rings don't go down to the bottom of the skirting,so I don't really see what the problem would be.If it doesn't work, then I'm only out a few bucks, but if I get a new cylinder for $150,then that jacks up the cost of my little hobby here.I'm not a perfectionist who goes through the saw from top to bottom & replaces every nut & bolt & then paints it up to stick it on a shelf to never put it through a log again.I want this 100 cc hog to go to work out in the lot.I want to know what it's like to handle a big old saw.I had an old Mall over 35 yrs.ago & let it go like a fool. I'd also like to know if the piston is OK to reuse.I've been told no,get a new piston for $140 & get a new cylinder for $150.Throw in the rings for $15 & some gaskets. Now we're talking over $325.I had to buy a new air filter cover & nut - that was over $30.I just bought a new coil - that was $46.By the time it's all said & done,we're talking around $400.I don't think the saw is worth it.Oh,almost forgot a carb kit & a fuel cap-another $25.

For all the trouble you have reported on that saw, I would wait for another to come by and use one for parts.

There’s one on eBay, 2 XP1000 parts saws.

Thanks Greg! I put a bid in immediately. The shipping on them is a deal breaker though - $85 from Canada.I hope at least one of them has a good cylinder.Maybe between those two & mine there'll be enough parts to make two.Lol

I was just notified by Ebay that my bid on the two XP-1000's was cancelled,so I'm back to looking again.I knew it was too good to be true, that was probably a once in a yr.posting on Ebay. When cleaning off part of my work bench I found the chip that was missing out of the original cylinder.Maybe a little glue & I'm good to go?Lol Thisd post was respectfully submitted to all members included.

Sellers sometimes do that, not sure why though. He relisted the saws with a buy it now at 100.00 and they sold right away.

That likely means that the seller got an offer that he'd accept, but couldn't add it to the original auction because it already had a bid. It's a crap way to do business in my opinion, but it does happen.

As Greg said,it went back on for "buy it now"& sold immediately for $100.My max bid was $101,I'm sure it might've gone for more than my max bid.The auction was supposed to end on Sat.I think what happened was he had a buddy that wanted them & it was a quick way for that to happen. If he told his buddy to watch as he was doing this, his buddy would get the saws immediately.Like you said Leon,a crappy way to do business. Posted with asll due respect to members involved.

That really sucks, I wonder what it is that motivates people like that. While a deal like that may not come again soon, something will show up. Good luck. Good luck to us all.

Thank you Dan! there are alternatives that I discussed with Leon previous to those two XP-1000's showing up on the scene.I didn't want those stupid XP's anyway.LolLeon has a new cylinder for $149,I can get a new piston kit on Ebay for $40.I just bought a new carb kit for $6.30 (yeah, can you believe that price?the kit was made by Zama for Tillotson),all I'll need next is a couple of gaskets.Oh.I forgot to mention that I have Chainsawlady involved with this too,she may have a good used cylinder lying around,ya never know. This post was made with all duue respect to all members involved.

I am going to correct another mislead post here... I am the seller of these saws. These saws were listed for a week with no bids. So i used some muffler hardware for my project saw. I then relisted saws without properly updating ad. When i realized mistake i changed ad immediatly and proceeded with a buy it now option.. Timing worked out for purchaser... This is not a buddy. I do not know purchaser. Thanks for understanding. Scott

Thanks for posting this Scott. We are sorry to have spoken out of turn on your motives with this deal. It is pretty easy to do on line, when the other side is not known. That is not an excuse, just the way it is. It is very kind of you to let us know, we can all learn from this.
Hopefully you will forgive us and stick around. Thank YOU for understanding. Dan

Dan I think we can all learn from recent postings concerning eBay and craigslist sellers. In reality we do not know the circumstances or motivation of the sellers and to guess or surmise on the forum is counterproductive because we are generally wrong and it doesn't show potential members our best side. I used to belong to a tractor forum that had a whole section dedicated to making fun of and disrespecting eBay and craigslist sellers;many of those sellers found those postings.

Yep, I'm just as guilty as anyone at assuming the worst. I guess we all need to turn over a new leaf and quit being so pessimistic!
My apologies Scott for my role in this discussion.

Welcome aboard Scott. I think it has been easy for some of us to get jaded with some sellers and I think that happens with any hobby, but I think we are all glad you came here with a thick skin and gave us the opportunity to get to know you and hopefully become friends
