As I was sitting there looking at the metering spring that I thought I'd lost for the Walbro HDC carb I'd been working on,a thought occurred to me that the metering spring looked awfully familiar.I might be wrong about this, but it looks a lot like the springs used in the old Zippo lighters & possibly the Bic or Cricket disposable lighters.I don't have any on hand to dissect. The lighters'springs might be just a bit too heavy?

Walbro still sells replacement springs for quite cheap...there's a downloadable catalog on their website. I just ordered several different part#'s to keep on hand for shop use. I paid about $1 a spring by ordering 10 at a time.

What about Tillotson? I know Zama includes them in their kits.

Lighter springs would be impossibly stiff.

The amount of spring tension on the lever is important. I don't know that you would be able to substitute the spring easily. Kart racers will keep a selection of various tensions of lever springs to adjust the pop off pressure of the needle when they pressurize the fuel inlet. Usually 10-12 psi for gas carbs.

Its always a good idea to consider options.
I was not aware that these springs could be purchased separately.

Sooner or later, I'll add some of the common ones to my website. The problem is there isn't one consistent spring throughout a carb series; the HDC uses 2 or 3 different ones, depending on the carb. It'll take more time than I have right now to map it all out, but I'll get to it ASAP.
I'm not sure about Tillotson...the catalogs I've come across do not have a separate listing for the springs that corresponds to a model#. So I'll have to dig through individual carburetor IPL's (where available).
