Back awhile ago I acquired two 410's,both had really nice compression,145 psi & 150 psi.I needed to put both saws together to make one & I got some parts from Joyce feebay as well.I finished putting it together today & primed the carb & it took off screaming at full throttle.I checked to see if the linkage was stuck open - it's not.I also checked to make sure that the butterfly is not stuck open & that the screw is in place - both of those check out as well.Any ideas?

My first guess would be to check the boot. I'm guessing you replaced it, but I've had bad luck with 'em. Maybe just me, but they seem even thinner than the boots on the pro '50 series. 410 boots are also not symmetrical. Make sure it's turned the right direction.... heck I can't remember now if it points inward or outward... it's been a while, but if it gets stressed from pulling it's apt to get a split.

Sounds like the boot to me. A crank seal will make it hard to tune, but it'll at least run. The boot is pretty easy to access on these; all the work can be done through the carburetor chamber.

OK,this is making sense to me.I had to swap carbs from onesaw to the next,so something probably got messed up in the process.I know changing the carb over from one saw to another was a major pain in the butt to mer.I've always changed out carbs on the top of the saw, never on the side.I know boots for this model are quite pricey too.

There really not pricey at all,15.85 with free shipping, you can't hardly buy a new stihl scrench for that.

I've only seen the ones for over $18.I see that 'Lil Red Barn is selling a lot of aftermarket Homelite stuff - piston kits, new intake boots,I'm sure there's more. It's good to see that someone wants the Homelite name to live on,too bad there aren't more like that.I messaged him about a cylinder for my 902,he replied & said"it costs me $1000 to have a casting made for a piston, whereas a casting for a cylinder would cost me $10,000.$1000 I can afford,$10,000 I can't."

Man I stay away from those "bunch of saws" deals, too much money and work to figure out why someone threw them out in the first place. I have a friend that just bought 2500 dollars worth of saws off a craigslist ad back East with another 200 shipping for 24 saws, I have a bad feeling he isn't going to like what he sees when he opens his crate.

That's a lot of money for 24 saws! I picked up 20 saws for $15 ea.for a total of $300.I figured that I couldn't go wrong even if they were beyond being repaired, most every one had a bar & chain on them.I figured that I'd make money parting them out. There were only a couple saws that had scored pistons, like the 340,but I was able to use the carb off that one for the 290,well worth the $15 investment.I figured that the bars & chains are worth more than $15.My saw dealer just wanted to make room for Stihl saws.He got rid of all of his Homelite parts awhile back.He told me the other day that he can get Homelite parts if I need them, but I know he'd mark them up as any smart business man would do.I know he's getting the parts from the same place that I am,so I just eliminate the middle man.

Is this where the boot goes? 20180209_172149 by edju1958, on Flickr If so,then this is what's left of it as I tried to take it out of the other 410.This is the result,it came out in pieces because it crumbled with age & heat. 20180209_172256 by edju1958, on Flickr

Probably E-10 disintegration. The 330 boots range $7-$19. The 410 sound wonderfully big compare to a 330?(I got 3)

If I could get ethanol free gas,I'd do it in a heartbeat.I was buying gas nearby last yr.on the Indian Reservation because they said it was ethanol free. Then about 6 mo.ago I heard one of the attendants as he was pumping gas say"yeah we tell everybody it's ethanol free, but it really isn't".That really pissed me off.Now I get my gas at the truckstop,it's only 5 -10 cents higher than on the reservation & I know it's tested by N.Y.State for the octane rating, sediment,& moisture. The res doesn't have to test for anything.I was having a lot of problems with my small engines, but since I've switched everything is good again.

And this is why I stay away from parts saws and deal on saws. I don't want to spend my time working on something that isn't worth repairing or can't be repaired at a reasonable cost, you're just beating a dead hose and having to eat it in the end. I don't like dead horse. I'm partial to peaches

So far with this 410 - Cost of saw-$15,air filter-$4,air filter cover-$15,engine housing cover-$14.new boot-$16=$64.Now I don't think that $64 for a beautiful Homelite 410 with 150 psi is a bad deal at all,& keep in mind that this saw is 68 cc.The bar & chain are like new.Yes,maybe there's a bit more to be done yet, like a carb rebuild.Where else are you going to go & get basically a new saw for that kind of money?Answer-NOWHERE! Most importantly - I'm learning a lot, plus I'm enjoying myself! I'm reviving something that was left for dead yrs.ago.This saw will probably outlive me!
