NICE work there! Way to go. Old Homelites never die. How about a picture?

BTW, for others here, other than fine Scotch your area of Scotland is also noted for where the Cairn (Toto, from the Wizard of Oz)and West Highland terriers originate as well as several other terrier breeds. It is very near the Cairngorms National Park. Cairn is a name for a stone marker or monument. These Cairns were built by many different cultures in the upper latitudes to mark paths, burials, or other points of importance. The terrier breeds from this area are some of the smartest and best animals a person can have, I know I have a Yorky-Cairn mix that is a great dog.

That looks like a really nice XL-12, too bad that old fart is in the way of the saw! (KIDDING, just kidding, VERY nice pic, thanks for sharing it.)

My saw has a wooden chain guard, as shown in the photo. It's a neat piece of woodwork, but can anyone tell me whether it's a home-made one-off, or an original accessory please?

Its homemade. Homelite did have bar sleeves, but they came out much later and were made of plastic.

Nice unit, very nice. The chain guard is homemade, the factory ones were rubbery plastic, red with white "HOMELITE" on them. They are a little fragile but there are still a lot of them around.

Welcome aboard! Glad you've decided to keep that Homelite. They are good saws and fun to work with. Just to let you know, the XL-12 is going great, and we have a new web address banchorymensshed.orgUnusually, we are having good summer weather here!

Great to see an XL-12 back in the running. They are my favorite family of saws! I have multiple ones, so the first one doesn’t get lonely !

I like that chain guard. I think I'll make one or two. Thanks for the idea.

That’s good to hear! The original owner of the saw had the saw from new and probably made the cover himself. He was a sculptor and a very practical guy. He’s now in his nineties and donated the saw to us when he was downsizing.

The guard looks good but some wood has acid properties and will corrode steel. Might be something to check up on before leaving the guard on a collector saw long term. Obviously in this case it was not a problem.

Looks like the gaffer took good care of his saw. Bar length should be good enough for 95 percent of what you may encounter.
