Hi everyone, I recently acquired 2 more 450's.I looked 'em over good today.Saw #1 has good compression.I squirted some fuel mix into the carb & it took off immediately, but it was loud as hell.I looked to see that the muffler was off & only half of it was there.I tred the same thing with saw #2,but I discovered it had no spark plug boot.So I tried to put the good muffler onto saw #1,but found that one of the bolt holes for mounting the muffler had been completely stripped out.Would it be a good idea to use some JB Weld to put in the stripped out bolt hole ,then re-tap it?Only thing is I lost one of the muffler bolts. They're special Allen type bolts.I could modify the muffler a bit & put a regular headed bolt in it's place. On saw #2 that's missing the spark plug boot,I tried the boot from saw #1,but it ddn't fire.Saw #2 has good compression as well. How can I check saw #2 to see if it has spark? It looks like I'll need some sort of specialty tool for that. Both saws have been stting for God knows how long with gas in the tanks,so I know that a carb rebuild is a must. One of them looked like it had very little use.Oh,I almost forgot - saw #2 had the muffler brazed, apparently there was a problem with that model's muffler breaking because I got 2 different 450's with the muffler broken in half. All advice is welcome.

Here's a link for a pretty simple to make spark test method for the pro series Homelites. As for fixing a stripped out muffler mount, Helicoil/FixaThred inserts as well as the solid, non-coiled type inserts work great. Here's a link to a 1/4-20 kit on Amazon. Dan

The thread repair advice from Dan is good, do not try to use JB or any other epoxy fix on a hot cylinder. (I would not use it on a cold one either,)
Helicoils and the like are easy to use but you need to be careful with your first ones and follow the directions exactly, after a couple it will be very simple.
Be certain to use the correct drill bit to size the hole, it is different from the correct normal tap drill size and will vary depending on the brand of repair insert you buy. Many kits come with the correct bit included and there are different types of installation tools so the kits and brands can be quite different in price.
