Good thing I have two of these saws to work with I feel your pain, Stihl 039 has me stumped on fuel delivery (what a POS to work on), I'm trying to rehab the 2000 ignition, and the pain in my hand that the VA promised to look at 2 years ago still reminds me everyday that it is still there and not getting better.

Well, I assume(!) that you mean you are having trouble with the recoil spring. Start with the outer end of the spring engaged in its retaining slot and wind the spring in the correct direction slowly and carefully. The housing should be secured so it does not move around on you. You can do that in your lap if you are brave or clamp it to the bench or in a vise. You will need both hands to hang on to the spring but it is really not that big a deal. Do not get in a hurry or try to answer your phone in the middle.

Thanks once I cleaned it up good it really was t too bad. It was just late last night that thing was awfully dirty. I cleaned the whole saw up good back when I started on this but I was afraid to take that apart just yet. After the final pull last night when the rope didn’t return I figured what better time to take that apart than now
