Any hints how to get the hub and drum nut off and which direction it turns before I do something stupid?

I haven’t done a 2000, but a 3100, outer nut is right hand, clutch spider is left hand.

As far as I know, Homelite was consistent with their clutches and clutch drum nuts as Undee described. Clutches are all left hand and the retainer nuts are right hand thread.

At least with a retainer nut, you can have some confidence on running the saw without bar and chain and have not to much fear of the clutch flying off.

Okay. I got the nut off and built a clutch spanner, now how do I hold pressure on the crank to remove the clutch? Thanks again. BTW, I did look in the Homelite Service book third edition, but I did not see this part in it.

I use the rope trick. This is how I do it. With spark plug out insert a small screwdriver or stiff wire in plug hole, turn engine slowly till you find TDC. Turn engine till piston drops about a 1/2 inch from TDC. Hold engine still and using some old starter rope, jam as much rope that will fit into plug hole. Turn engine back till it locks. Do not let piston go to low, (ie turning engine wrong way after putting in rope). You do not want the rope to get caught in one of the ports.

If the flywheel is on, I use a strap wrench around it, not on the fins. The coil/module has to come off to get a clean shot with the strap.
