Sounds like you're trying to tell me I should keep buying saws... I think I'm on board with that.
Temps in the 60's & 70's are long gone here. The fire I started in the Vermont Castings Vigilant three weeks ago is still burning and barring any freak weather, will still be going 24/7 into March. First coat of snow is on the ground as of the other day, the bear are sleeping for the winter and even the most tenacious Oaks finally let go of the last of their leaves the other day. We'll have a balmy day in the 30's tomorrow then it's down into the teens and 20's for several days straight. At this point, any wood not cleaned up and under cover is at risk of being locked in ice & snow till Spring. Won't be the first winter I'm out there running a chainsaw with snowshoes on my feet and dam unlikely to be the last.

I really do think a C series gear saw with a long bar would be a better investment. I use facebook marketplace to locate a lot of vintage saws. A C51g, C71g, or a C91g would all be great candidates.

While I have no problem with that at all except the time involved in waiting for one to come up at a reasonable price, the 16" bar on the Super XL is just too small for that saw. Besides the post office is currently bringing me a really nice Super EZ that already has a 16" bar and is much more appropriately sized for it.

Last week I was in a retail store, spotted an Oregon 16" bar and chain for $40. Put it on my XL-500 with an 8 tooth rim, had to grind the back off the upper corner of the bar cuz the chain is a drive too short for the 8 teeth. Who cares, its a throw away bar. Man does it cut, high speed, low drag. I think 16" is just about right.

I think 16" is just about right. Just right is a matter of perspective. This is what is currently/still blocking part of my driveway. The image is a bit skewed, the dog is a lot bigger than he looks standing there. He weights around 85 -90 lbs. The log on top, up and to the right of the dogs posterior is about all the 16" bar can handle, the one the dog is blocking, is the reason I'm looking for a 24" bar. The top over my waist as I stand next to it.

Got distracted by a client two minutes before the auction ended and got back to it ten seconds too late. **^%#*#^$!!!! This just isn't my year.

This just isn't my year. I was watching it to see where it went, but I took my Mom out for her birthday and when we finished I got the email saying it sold. I thought someone here said the 24 inch bar was to long for my 9o2AM, so I didn't think about a 24 inch bar and then I went back and looked aa the thread and it was about the 36" bar. But Joyce stil has 20" sprocket tips with a chain for a good price, so I'm going to stick with 20" bars, except for the 24" .404 roller nose on my 2000
