Will post more pics. I took the clutch cover of the other day and the clutch has gouged a ring in cover. so I think so to. There is no tag on it. So is there a part number someplace that will tell wich saw it is. many the carb number. Many years ago I changed the bar for a foot shorter than it was. There isn't anything that big to saw anymore, around here.

The style of ignition, style and location of oiler auto and or manual carb info etc are good places to start looking for model.. When a saw has been altered from orginal it does get tricky. You see many clutch covers with a perfect round groove or hole right through the cover. Most of the times from the small plate screws backing out into the cover as the motor spins it makes a hole.

Looks like a XL850 with a XL700 handle to me. That is if it has 5/16 bar studs. If it has 3/8 bar studs I would say XL923 [because of padded handle] with an XL850 oiler and cylinder with a XL700 handle. Just a guess. Measuring the bore thru the exhaust will help narrow it down even more.

Studs are (3/8). Bore is a 64th or so less than 2in. Does that make it an XL923?

Probably a XL923 tank and crankcase and a XL700 or so cylinder and handle. The original XL923 cylinder bore would be over 2 inches and have a decompression valve. Under 2 inch is 77cc over 2 inch 82cc. There are many variants in this line and parts can be interchanged a lot making it very hard to determine the exact model it is. Charles.

OK . That makes it more interesting to me. Witch coil should use? It runs when cold till ts hot then dies. with clutch side cover should use? Has a big clutch. Cut into the one on it.

Could be the condenser. Might want to check it first. XL923 cover should be okay. The screws on the clutch shoe retainer stick out too far based on picture. Originals are flatter and shorter. Also don't run the saw with the cover on with out the bar for spacing or the screws will contact and damage the cover.

This thing cuts about as good as my big huskavarna did. In a big cloud of chips. Am not going to change it, just repair it. I like this saw. Now I like it more. imagine a trapper or loger. His saws are all dead. Builds a saw on his kitchen table in the evening. Gets this saw out of the build.

I believe Homelite spec'd up to a 36" bar, but I'd stick to 24-30". My XL-870 performs well with a 27" bar and an 8-pin sprocket.
