My old 7-21 was running great until one day after running out of fuel, it would not re-start after re-fueling. It has spark and fuel to the carb. put a kit into the carb but still can't get it to go. Frustrating thing is, it runs when fuel is put in the spark plug hole, but it quickly quits again . I really love this saw and want to use it again. If anyone has had this problem and knows what it might be, please share it with me. It just seems like it's probably something simple. I would love to share a picture of it, but all of my pics are over 1MB.

If it runs and turns over with fuel in hole then the problem is traced back to carb. Is the metering lever reset in carb? Is fuel going to carb and flooding?

It does not seem like a flooding situation. I don't think it's pulling fuel into the cylinder. There is fuel running out of the fuel line when disconnected from the carb. I am inexperienced and don't know about resetting the metering lever. I first checked the screen which was clean so I went a little further thinking it might be the diaphragm was bad, I ordered a kit and installed it. I am thinking I am over my head and will have to take it to someone.

Hello Brian, Understand how you can feel intimidated with rebuilding a carb if you haven't done one before. Once you dive in though, I bet you'll see there's not that much to it afterall. Here's a link to an Arboristsite post showing details of an HL rebuild. Tillotson HL rebuild on ASAlso, here's a link to youtube with an HL rebuild. Youtube HL rebuild linkThere's also online parts diagrams if you search. It's a nice feeling when you learn how these things really work. Best of luck, Dan

Hey Dan,
Really appreciate the links. I will watch the video and check out the Arboristsite post. I really appreciate your help. I will let ya know how I make out. I hope I will realize the feeling you speak of and the satisfaction that I will surely have if I can make the old saw sing again.
Thanks so much, Brian

Hey Dan,
I wanted to let you know that I got the saw running today! I rebuilt the carb with the help of the video you told me about. Thanks so much for that, as it gave me the confidence to do it. It turned out to be a simple thing after all. The high speed needle had somehow vibrated out. When I was taking the carb apart I discovered it just wasn't there. I wish I would have noticed this before, but I have a relatively untrained eye, and in my defense, it is an unusual thing to have happen...isn't it? Guess I should have thought about adjusting the carb but...well... So...long story short, I got a needle out of a junk EZ that had a similar HL carb. Carb did not have the same number but the needle seemed to be the same...albeit it was hard to tell being I did not have one to compare it with...anyway, VIOLA, it worked! Anyway, thanks SO much for giving me the confidence to rebuild the carb. You were right. There wasn't as much to it as I thought and I was capable of doing it but needed a push. You provided that "push" for me and I am grateful! Without that push, I never would have discovered the problem. This saw was my late fathers saw and it means a lot to me. We did not have much in common...it seems our love for great saws was one of the few things we had...and I want to hang on to that. In closing, I know I said thanks already, but I want to say it again because it meant so much to me to get the saw running again. So thank you once again, Thank You for responding to my post!
Sincerely,
Brian L. Hulbert
P.S. I will update my profile picture soon with a new one with lots of blue smoke!!!

That's great news Brian! It's always a great feeling to get a saw up and running again, and when it's been in the family, it just doesn't get any better. Way to go!
Dan

Hey Dan,
As evidenced by the beautiful blue smoke in the picture, the 7-21 is alive and well. Now I have an original EZ-6 that I bought just to get a high speed needle to replace the lost one in the 7-21. Problem is, I got attached to the EZ-6 now and actually rebuilt the carb in it and got it running too. Now I am looking for another high speed needle and I am also looking for replacement o-rings that go on the needles to keep them put. I'm having trouble locating these items. Do you know where I could find these items?
Brian

Standard buna o-rings should be fine for those needle rings, they are commonly used with gas and oil and should be available anywhere o-rings are sold. If your local hardware store doesn't have the size, check bearing houses or industrial supply outlets. Another Dan

Thanks "Another Dan" Appreciate the input. I had looked at my local hardware store and a Huskvarna/Ariens dealer and had no luck there, so I will continue my quest. I will check MSC or McMaster Carr. Thanks. Brian I would greatly appreciate any info you have too chainsawlady. Thank You.
