I'm having trouble with the starter free spooling and not engaging. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

If you take off your recoil cover and see a cup attached to the flywheel, it's a Fairbanks Morse starter. When you pull on the rope a pair of friction shoes are supposed to extend and the sharp edges grip the inside of the cup to turn it over. Frequently the shoes get gummy from oil and debris and don't extend. I'd spray the area down with brake cleaner or something similar and pull out the rope several times to see if they free up. I had to do this to a Pioneer 650 a few days ago to get it to pull over. [/URL]

Sorry, I probably should gave more information about the saw. Its a c-51. When you pull the recoil assembly out there is a race bolted to the flywheel and bearings inside of the recoil cover. Do you think by cleaning those bearings with brake clean or carb cleaner would do the same trick? Thanks a lot for any advice given.
