Hi everybody, I'm putting together an XL-12, (blue if it makes a difference). I'm at the point of setting the points. The ignition has three 12/24 bolts. The bottom 2 are slotted and the top one is just a hole. Doesn't seem to me to be a lot of adjustment with the slots? Also to set the gap, I turned the crank and watched thru the exhaust port for the piston to reach TDC. Then I gaped the points. Does this sound like the way it's done? Figured I would add a picture for clarity: TIA

Looked in my manual and it states that the armature riveted to stator plate and has non adjustable gap. Point gap .015. Magneto stator plate has slotted mounting holes and should be turned as far clockwise as possible to obtain correct ignition timing of 30 degrees BTDC. Usually when adjusting point gap you turn the crankshaft until the points are open as wide as they will go and set the gap. Also notes to be carefull and not bend tension spring any more than necessary when installing point set.. Thought I e-mailed you the service info for the XL 12 saws? If you want a copy send me your e-mail address and I will send you a copy. Tom
