I have just purchased an old (1974?) XL2 auto, which seems to have a lot of life left in it. The old chain is 1/4" (0.050) with 69 drive lengths. Any suggestions for a source of replacement chains?

I only found one online source with one 69 DL chain. Can you suggest a specific one(s)?
chainsawlady, can you provide a quote for making up 2 chains and shipping to NC?

Would Woodland Pro 10SC work? (the existing chain has 25 on each drive link). What about Forester?

Joined the forum today after viewing it yesterday. I have an XL2 Automatic I purchased in 1975. It has been used and abused and now I am trying to restore it back to what it was when I first met it. It has been a great saw; I feel it deserves restoration and a place of honor in my den.
I noticed a member is looking for a source of 1/4 inch pitch .050 gauge chain. Stihl makes and sells a 1/4 inch .050 gauge chain called "Oilmatic(R) Stihl Rapid(TM) Micro(TM) (RM) chain. Most large Stihl dealers should have it in bulk and should be able to make a chain with the number of drive links you want. The part number for this chain is 3660.
I suggest getting a 2013 Stihl catalog; go to pages 31 - 34 for chain and page 137 for info on how to identify Stihl saw chain.
A note of caution is due here; the RM 1/4" .050 chain is a Yellow labeled chain, which means it does NOT comply with ANSI B175.1 Chain Saw Kickback Standard.
I have two Homelite saws, the XL2 and a UT10926 33 cc 16" Ranger and 6 Stihl pro saws. My XL2 probably means more to me than all the rest as it is the first chainsaw I purchased and the first that I ever operated and of course I have had it the longest... it ain't "For-Sale."
I have a few questions regarding my XL2, which I will ask in a more appropriate thread.

Stihl has one other chain with 1/4 inch pitch and .050 gauge; it is the Oilomatic(R) Stihl Rapid(TM) Micro(TM) Special (RMS) Carving Chain. The part number for it is 3661; you can find it in the 2013 Stihl catalog on page 34 bottom left. It is also a yellow labeled chain that does NOT conform to the ANSI B175.1 Chain Saw Kickback Standard.
Hope this helps.

An Oregon 25 ap Profesional, non ANSI kick back compliant chain list price is $35.86 for a 69 drive link chain. Pro chain can cause kick back. I have about 150 ft of Stihl 1/4 pitch chain and would make you one up for $27.00 plus shipping. I would ship it the cheapest way and only charge actual shipping costs. If you would like more than one chain I may discount it a little more depending on how many you want. Tom

Bringing life back to this XL2 chain thread.
Having recently acquired a 32cc stihl 015L which used 1/4 chain. I then got 2 stihl 72dl chain for $23 ea from the local stihl dealer. Cheaper than oregon chain from Baileys....I was amazed with the performance of the smaller chain.
On my 26cc XL2 auto I had converted the spur drum to 3/8lp with new chains. It has a hard nose bar. The original 1/4" spur drum was well worn. So I have now decided to go back to the original type 1/4" chain. Ebay has provided a new 1/4" 9pin spur drum for not much money. I'll be looking forward to a test to see if it livens up the cutting speed.

CSL Is it oregon 25A or 25AP chain? I got 13RM stihl which is like 25A oregon. That's 21.60 by my calculator for a 72dl... I'm all set with the stihl saw for now. I'm only looking for 25A chain and not skip. If this is what you have then OK. IF so I will contact you for some 1/4" for my XL2 and my Poulan. might take a few weeks....
Added: found out 25A is now obsolete. While I have seen rolls for sale, it is not listed by Oregon anymore. So 25AP is now current production. Gotta admit I like the Stihl 13RM/Oregon 25A better.

The chain run should be 4" total longer, 2 top, 2 bottom, 2 dl per inch makes 8 or 77 is the guess. Since bars are not with identical tip profiles the actual count could be off.

Thanks supercharged86 ,,,does anyone know how many drive links the chain would be on a 14" bar 1/4" pitch Homelite XL-2? You really should count the drive links in the old chain. If you don't have one that matches the bar, you should find someone who does and count it.

I agree Dave, 2" top and bottom, however my Homelite C25 chain measures 3 dl per inch or 9 for 4 continuous inches. Likewise, I agree that different bar profiles will result in different number of dl. If he has an original Homelite PT-14504-50 bar, my guess is the total would be around 78 (based on the 69 for the 12"). My reference materials do not list a 14" 1/4 pitch bar for the XL-2 but that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't exist.

Thanks supercharged86 ,,,does anyone know how many drive links the chain would be on a 14" bar 1/4" pitch Homelite XL-2? gator If I remember correctly Homelite or anyone else never had a 14" bar with 1/4 pitch. If you measure the whole bar it may be a 14", but Homelite measured the length of wood that could be cut with a bar. You would measure end of bar to front of saw. It would be called a 12".I have one new bar 12" PT12251-E4 - which is a 1/4 pitch. I also have #25 Oregon chain in both skip tooth and not skip tooth. Also have 1/4" sprockets. n chainsawlady

Well you are more than likely right I looked at the bars I had and the 14" bar I thought was 1/4" pitch, was not, It is 3/8" so that was a mistake on my part. however I do have a 12" 1/4" pitch bar I need chain for it I could figue out how many DL i needed. Thank you all for your help.
