Ordered some from scsupply, hopefully be in the mail soon. We have a cabinet style and a bigger one that does steel shot. Our smaller cabinet one we use glass beads in. Works real well.

Hello, I'm vikinglaw
I'm new to the site. My father has an old XL12 that was purchased by my great-granddad. I recently persuaded him to let me take it home to make some minor repairs. Once I got it here and begen to examine it, I relized that it was not going to take much internal work to get it up and running, then I had an idea. I should repair what is broken, but I would like to surprise him by restoring the paint. I was hoping to get some suggestions on primer, paint, and clear, as I am not well versed in the principle of gas resistence. I'm not terribly concerned about matching the paint exactly. I was considering a metallic blue, pearl white, decal kit, and maybe stenciling all the names of the forfathers on the recoil cover. I greatly appreciate any info or ideas that ya'll can provide.

Thanx Tommy
I did read page one, I guess I was just trying to cheat and hoped that was a simple, foolproof solution, I really don't want to screw this up.

Just curious? Do they share bare metal paint adhesion problems? The older OEM paint had lead in it did'nt it? Zinc chromate primer? Was it laquer or enamel based. Will a proper clear coat protect the paint from fuel? Is fuel with ethenol more likely to spoil the paint job? I do not use or recomend ethenol fuel for ANY small engine , ESPECIALLY 2 cycle engines old or newer. You can mix hardener in acrylic enamel. I wonder if that would be more fuel resistant. As I get more into saw restoration I would like to experiment with one of those small air brush style paint guns and make a mini spray booth. A friend of mine made one just using furnas filters and a window fan he bought at a garage sale for a dollar. Works very well. Why not hone your skills on any old brand of saw you can find cheap. Buy it, disassemble it, clean it, sand blast it and paint it with the kind of paint you plan to use on the Homelite you are working on and see how it looks , does the paint color match ok;) If not acceptable, resandblast and try something different until you have it looking like you want. Then do the good saw. Just some food for thought. If you go to all the work, make it look the way you want it to. TOm

older paint did have lead in it and HOMELITE used it. I wonder if lead paint in general is stronger??

Good paint info, thanks to all for posting. My garage isn't heated, so I'm still a couple of months away from painting weather.
How about those of you who have painted your saws posting pictures and include the paint i.d. info.

I'm new to the H.O.H.,so this question probably has been discussed, but I just bought an all red XL 12,runs great, but could use a paint job. Will Ford Duplicater red engine paint work or is there some other red paint that would be a better match? My saw is dark red not the orange red. Thanks for any help in advance!

this is what i used one of my xl-400's. HOMELITE seemed to use a darker red on the 400 compared to the xl-12.

always remember old saw paint fades from the sun over time. gets scratched, and or fuel gets spilled on paint causing a different paint tone.

Ether is for my tractor, and that is it. I would never use and recommend that no one use ether on a small engine. Absolutely! No lubricant in starting fluid, it's worse than straight gassing it!

I am restoring a 1964 Homelite generator. It is a light metallic blue color. Would it be the same color as used on chainsaws of this vintage? Krylon/Dupli-ColorPontiac Light Blue Metallic DE 1616 Looks to be a pretty close match. It is Pontiac engine paint used 66-70. Has anyone used this color?
thanks, Jerry

My next saws will be powder coated but it does work and holds fairly well.

If so, it matches the color for chainsaws of that period.

First time I have seen your restoration page, fabulous! That is really going to be helpful, well it looks like it is already! Please keep doing what you are doing, very helpful, very appreciated. If anyone else has suggestions, are you open to including them? Are you planning on gleaning tips from past threads? (Maybe a list of painting threads and videos? (At least your own)) Sure, it could be a full time job, what else do you have got to do anyway? (Can you tell I have a saw to paint?)
