My neighbor recently gave me a red Home Super XL 12. It appears the saw hasn't been used a lot. Great compression. The gas line definitely needs to be replaced. One side of the clutch is broken and sticking out when i took off the sprocket cover. I'm betting someone broke it when they were trying to pop off the clutch. I can put the cover back on. Not sure if this will work when I do get the saw running. Comments needed on this problem. My priority question is I can't get any spark on the saw. HOw can i check to see if the coil is any good?? I realize this is a dumb question but does the super xl 12 have points?? If so, I cannot find them. Would appreciate any help or advice. Glen

Hi, Let's start by getting the model type cleared up. Homelite didn't make a Super XL-12 in Red so is your saw an XL-12 or a Super XL Automatic? Is there a UT number on the serial plate? The serial number will tell us what year it was made so post the serial number. Have you had the rewind cover off? If so, what color is the coil?

Glen, thanks for the PM.. The reply button is either at the top or bottom of the thread page. It is in the blue bar. Click the reply to open the message box. What is telling you this saw is a Super XL-12? Is it on a decal or on the manufactures tag? Homelite did produce a Super XL-12 in the '60s but I'm not aware of any after that. Can you post the serial number so we can see what year it was made? Where is the bar oil cap? Is it on top by the upper handle bar bracket or is it at the bottom just behind the muffler? Craig

10045A is a UT for a Super XL Automatic... shouldn't be a 12 anywhere on the saw unless covers were swapped around.

first try different plugs then take fly wheel off the points and condenser are underneath. clean point contacts and check timing.
see if it sparks. If it doesnt, then go to plan-B

I would suspect the kill switch first, a quick test with a multi meter will tell you. with the pull cover removed and the kill switch in the on position, check for continuity between connection on back of switch and the pull cover. If you have continuity your saith is bad. If you don't have a meter, simply remove pull cover and disconnect the wire from the kill switch and wrap some electrical tape around the wire terminal so it doesn't short, reinstall pull cover and give er a few pulls and check for spark. Also take note of the color of your coil, if its electronic ignition the coil will be light blue.

The Super XL Auto UT-10045A has a solid state ignition system. The only components are: the kill switch, the module which is usually blue, and the spark plug wire and cap. If you've tried a new plug and still don't have spark, chances are pretty good that the module is bad. You could unplug the kill switch just to eliminate it. The plug wire rarely goes bad but the plug cap can pull loose. Make sure the ground wire from the module is firmly connected to the coil core. Give us an update.

ive always had bad luck with solid state ignition systems. They have always wore out on me or produce a week spark from coil dieing. But I only buy used saws .

I assume the kill switch you're referring to is the on/off switch??? I did unplug it and still no fire after having used a couple of other plugs. Guess its time to call NAPA.
