Super XL or the XL-12, for any regular guy looking for the firewood saw and wants to own it for thirty or forty years. Just remember to bring your hearing protection ...
Most of my Supers and XLs have a 20" or 24" bar/chain combo (I won't mention the brand but I am partial).
On the down side: I think that in the next ten years these saws will be outlawed in many states (at least in the Metro areas). It's already happening out here.
my .02 is Never Buy New (when it comes to chainsaws)

Both noise pollution and air pollution.
When I fire up one of the big beasts I try to do it in the garage, and during a weekday. We'll see what the future holds, but I already cannot legally use my Echo PB412 and it is only two years old! I now run it just above idle, during the weekday, and only to blow off the needles on my 4000ft roof a few times per year. I risk a fine, and if I remember right a third offense is jail time. Compared to the 775, the PB412 is as quiet as a church mouse. I have never fired the 5-20.

My wife works at the "Big Orange Box" in lawn & Garden and has also cut wood and worked on saws for 20+ years.
She said the Home" Depot"lites are made by Ryobi and are junk.
She agrees to fix a beat up "Real Homelite" rather then buy a new one. I think our EZ's and XL-12's are good and I also have a 245 that works pretty good. My Dad bought it new and it still looks it today. It's plastic, but an OK saw for light work.
Just our 2 cents,
Don

Portland Oregon. It's not the state but the local municipality. Believe it or not: there are actually listed models of equipment that can and cannot be used, and there are decibel levels at the lot line beyond which you are in violation. I've heard that California is tightening down standards as well, but I don't know anything about it.
Yes, George Orwell would be proud of Portland. You can't buy spray paint here without a drivers license, and they are trying to outlaw plastic bags. It goes on and on.
thanks,
-Doug

Yeah, here in CA, our tiny berg is seeking yet tighter restrictions on noise, they can't enforce the current ones. Some new commers complained about the foghorn, church bells and an icecream truck, I'm suprised they didn't want the sealions in the harbor to shut up. That 5-20 has a fine loud bellow, lite it up.

"murder" What are you in for? "Running my XL-12 three times.... What is this damned country coming to?, When a man can't go out and fire up his saw and cuts some wood. I'm glad I live out in the sticks. They will never take me alive. ;D

Everytime I walk PAST the display of brand new shiney Huskys [some priced over 1000.00] at the local TruValue I just kind of smile. My whole bunch added up didn't cost what one of those made as light as possible to sieze as fast as possible does.

Have they got around to requiring muffles on motorcycles?

Don't get ME started on motorcycles. I rode for decades.
Helmets are required for motorcycles but not for cars. Seat belts are required for cars and planes, but not for motorcycles or busses.
And the mufflers: I got a warning ticket in 1972 in West Linn Oregon for riding my yamaha without silencers in the pipes. Yet today, a FXWR (Harley) can cruise by and you can't hear yourself think it is so loud. So many of these laws are arbitrary, and enforcement is even more arbitrary.

No first hand experience with the new Homies, but if given the choice between a beater 150 or a brand new, in the box, straight from Home Depot, made in China Homelite.............. I'd without a hesitation pick the old 150. Know first hand how they're built (along with SEZs, XL-1xx, etc..), and just don't think the new stuff should even be compared to the older Homelites. Just one opinion here. It'd be great for someone with a new one to tear it down and show us all how its built. Maybe it'd change some of our minds about the newer stuff. Dan Not only has this production trend affected homeowner grade saws .....it now extends to what the public perceives as "Pro" grade saws ...like Stihl & Husky. All you have to do is pick up a 25 year old model of each, compare to a current model and the differences become clear. I am not saying that a pro grade saw is not better than a box store wildthing but quality cuts even extend to the elite saws.
