I purchased a c 52 for 11$. Got it running, then tore it apart for a cleaning, and a painting. it was a mess. the bar is gw 2224-50, the chain is an Oregon, it says 30 on the cutter and 72 on the drive. I can not tension correctly. if i tension it loose, as i rotate the chain the slack disappears and it gets too tight to turn, then loosens again. I assume the bar and chain were used on the saw before? the sprocket is not great, it says 38 on it i assume it is a 3/8 pitch. I put the bar and chain on my david bradley geardrive,( the db has a 3/8 sprocket) and it did the same thing. is the chain too long, or too short? how did someone use it like that before i got it?

Hi Buicken!!
Good score on the saw, their Beasts.
It sounds to me like your sprocket and posably your bar tip are worn. This usually results in the type of action you mentioned. You could have a mixed up Chain and sprocket combo, but that usually results in a more severe hangup of the chain that you cant rotate more than an inch or so.
Can you see worn areas on the sprocket and chain?
Are the tips on the Sprocket nose pointed or blunt?
