I know what the reeds do on their function but I curious how much of an opening is allowed? And what are the symptom's when they are not working properly. Thanks!

There can be several thousandths gap under the ends of them. There's really no spec on the gap that I'm aware of. Leaky reeds will have kind of a sputtering/popping out the carb and if bad enough, won't idle.
If the reeds are still 100% in tact, no chips or cracks on the ends, they're likely still doing their job. The only ones I've ever replaced were either split on the ends and missing small pieces or were worn razor thin on the edges.

Thanks for the info! The ones on the 1130g that I got recently measured out .028 on the feeler gauge but on the 1050 I got last week were completely closed. Both sets look good with no splits.

If they aren't very worn, you can try to turning them over to see if you get a tighter gap. I'd try one and see what it does then turn them all over if there's something to gain. Typically they're still flat though. They're pretty springy steel.
