Looks to be retainer for fuel cap on xl12 & others. Top of your picture would go into fuel tank opening , other end would go into fuel cap. I could be wrong, but that's what it appears to be.

Yup, definitely a fuel cap retainer........but I don't think it's XL-12. They used a screw to hold the end to the cap. But there were so many versions of the XL, I'm sure it's from one of them. Just check the IPL for your saw on Leon's site.

Yeah, but on his saw the eyelet the screw you mention would go thru has a wire bale going thru it for the aluminum cylinder attached. His pic is upside down compared to the IPL illustration. That cylinder must go over a bolt that attaches to the fuel cap or is retained in the cap with a C-clip. So screw 82256 is not used in his application. And all the XL's I've looked at use that screw, per the diagram, which is from a SXL-AO. So not sure what saws use that retainer arrangement. ;o) bob

I still have half a dozen XL12 variants but none of them have that piece, probably just lost, I know they had them. I was just digging around in my shed and found a couple that look very similar with the spring and chain. They came off old saws, I think a Zip and a Wiz.

Could someone tell me what this is please it was loose in the oil tank on XL automatic. Thanks. <button disabled="" class="c-attachment-insert--linked o-btn--sm">Attachment Deleted</button> The barbed end pushes into the bottom of the oil cap, it just keeps the oil cap on a tether preventing it from being lost. I have the same apparatus on the oil cap of my '72 red/white/green XL-Automatic. On other models the aluminium tube serves to also house the duckbill valve to vent the oil tank, but on this model the oil tank is vented via the cotter pin.

Checked my microfiche card. I should have said oil cap. Sorry. 5terrysupersaws is correct. It also SHOULD fit models XL925 / EZ auto / EZ250 / Super EZ + others. I will have to look more closely.

Appears to be a retainer chain and a vent system all in one, and for a small opening. Have not seen anything of that design used by Homelite. Maybe an other manufacturer. I like the idea of "all in one".
