Hi Guys,
So.......had a newer Stihl come today that was part of a package deal. Cute little toy of a saw, but why any OEM would choose white as a primary color for their saws is beyond me. Looks like crap after just a few uses. The saw has large amounts of dried tree sap on the handles and it's a bear to get off using things that are not very aggressive. So wondering how you guys remove old sap from plastic parts without getting too aggressive with the harsh cleaners.
thanks, bob

I have used WD-40 spray with good results, may have to let soak in awhile and shouldn't harm the plastic parts either. Hope that helps,Glenn.

Sorry I guess you already know that since I read your post about using WD-40 as degreaser too.

No problem Ash.....I did try the WD-40, but didn't let it sit on there very long. Will give it another go and and wrap a WD-40 soaked rag around the handlebar and rear bar, as that's where most of the dried sap is. Online says to try rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. So if the rain holds off, I'll try all 3, starting with the WD. Thanks for reminding me to be a bit more patient with the WD.

I have used “GOOF OFF”. It works amazingly good. Also will remove paint so be cautious if you do use it!

Hi xl, I did try one of those "goof thing" products......and it didn't touch it. But I need to go check the exact name of that stuff, as there's quite a few cleaners that try to pirate that name. To be honest I'm ASSUMING the crap on the handles is tree sap, but can't confirm. It was my first guess since it was in the two places you grab and hold the saw. And if you're handling cut pine logs and sawing all day I know my handles get full of sap crap.....so could be a bad assumption on my part. The rain seems to be holding off, so after I get all the critters fed I'll give it another go. Thanks for the reply!

This is the stuff I have. I’ve had this can for about 10 years. I have no ida where I got it or if it’s even on the market anymore but I swear by this stuff. It was able to remove tree sap from a saw that had probably been on there for over 20 years!

Hi XL,
I checked what I had also.......and it's called "Goo Gone". Close, but not the same as yours. Which explains why it didn't do much. MSDS for mine says it's mostly petroleum distillates. Checked the MSDS on your stuff and it's mostly benzenemethanol......ie, alcohol. So similar to rubbing alcohol and mineral spirits! It all makes sense.......thanks for posting that!!
