I got this XL-103 running again last summer. It tuirned out that it had a broken reed.I've been taking the saw out to cut & it's been acting rather weird.I'd start the saw uip to make a cut & then it'd stall out & was impossible to restart.Today I sharpened the chain & had it running A-OK.I ran out of fuel on a test cut & the saw refused to restart.Meanwhile I let it set & went to my neighbor's to take down a cherry tree for him.I got finished a bit early,so I saw that troublesome 103 just sitting there waotong to be tinkered with.It had great spark, just wouldn't fire.I tried different plugs & had the same problem. It'd just give a putt & that was it.While holding the boot I got juiced a bit,a good sign the saw has spark,Lol.That shouldn't have happened.I took the boot off & it was pretty ugly.I had to replace the plug & the boot. Now it starts every time.

Yup......nothing like the feeling of being a human spark plug to wake your butt up on a lazy Saturday afternoon! Can really smart a bit with a good ignition system. You just have to learn to jump up in the air as you pull the starter............takes some practice, but if you're holding a bare plug connection you'll get it right pretty quickly. Just make sure you get it on video!!

I'm afraid my jumping days are over,Lol.The "funny" thing about it was I liked it so much the 1st time that I did it again.I guess I thought it was my imagination the 1st time. About 2 or3 yrs.ago I was holding a running XL-800 when I found out the plug wire had worn through the insulation.I dropped that saw in a helluva hurry,Lol. As for a lazy Sat.afternoon,I don't think so.I went to a neighbor's to get a load of ash from the day before that I cut up.Then after lunch I went to another neighbor's to cut down a cherry tree (no,I didn't use an axe),& brought home another load of wood.I tackled the 103 afterwards.

I'm beginning to think this 103 I have is jinxed.I finally got the ignition problem fixed & loaded up the saw to go cutting today. The 101 had a problem with the muffler,so I figured I'd fire up the 103.I picked the saw up to start it & noticed the recoil was loose.Upon further inspection,I found 3 of the 4 screws missing.I've never had those screws vibrate out of the recoil like that before. Those screws are unusually small too.I hate to say it,but the yellow saw came to the rescue yet again (Timber Bear,55cc).
