I have a 1980 XL2 that I rebuilt the carburetor on. It will run when first put back together. Now it will not start and after pulling the cord a dozen times fuel will come out of the spark plug hole. I checked the diaphragm on the carburetor and it is assembled correctly and looks like it should be closing under the spring pressure. It appears to be flowing into the cylinder when the cord is pulled and also when it is just sitting on the bench. It looks like the fuel must be siphoning in? There is a spark. Thanks for your help

Did you use OEM carb kit or China one?

It is just running into the cylinder. I'm thinking the needle valve is sticking open. I can try putting the old needle valve back in and then try the old diaphragm it that does not stop it.

Check the nub in middle of diaphragm. Match it up to height on your old one. Those China made ones are pure junk. Gaskets seem ok. Walbro carb? You can use micrometer / caliper to check it.

I will check the height later tonight. I will verify make when I have it apart. Thanks

Most of the XL2's have a Walbro carb. I have some with the ZAMA carb. You can try to use the diaphragm you purchased, will have to file / sand down the aluminum nub. Be very careful not to tear diaphragm. What I use is flat surface such as glass / wood or ? Place piece of emery cloth sand paper on top of surface. Rub nub over it. Careful to not round off nub. Wont take much to remove what needs to be removed from nub. Check with caliper against your old one. I did one, never got another china carb kit. Hope this solves your flooding.

Definitely a height difference. Installed the old diaphragm and had the same problem. Will try swapping back to the old needle valve to see if that is it. If not I'll sand down the button on the new diaphragm. The carburetor says Homelite, make by Textron. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks

If carb if Walboro, it should have something like HDC-15 on side of it. Check out Leon's site for good video's he has on rebuilding these. Could be some on this site, but not sure.

So, I reinstalled the old diaphragm and old needle and after watching the video hooked up a clean fuel line to the inlet of the carburetor. Blowing gently I could hear the pin leaking. I disassembled and found the needle bore was not smooth. Using rolled up 360 emery I polished the bore then cleaned it out with spray cleaner. Just for good measure I stretched the closing spring slightly. After reassembly the valve was being held shut tighter and did not leak when pressurized. Reassembled and the saw runs well, no fuel leaking. Will check with full tank and do some cutting to verify. Thanks for your help

Glad to be of help. If you have any other issues, let us know. Lots of great members here. Those XL2 are great little saws. As you probably know, very easy to work on.
