Since the C52 turned out to be a wash,I opted for the model 500.I got it cheap - $40,but there might be a problem with the engine internals,or the starter/recoil.The seller said "it turns over tuff" (obviously can't spell).I toold him to take the plug out & put some lubricant in it to see if pulling it over got any easier.A couple days went by & I contacted him again to see if he put any lubricant in the plug hole. His reply was "honestly I haven't had the time".How long does it take to pull a plug, put some lubricant in it,put the plug back in?Maybe 2-3 min.? I didn't ask him to rebuild the engine for me,Lol.

Is it an old 500 from early 60's or a xl-500? Just curious

Hi Ed,
I was watching that one. Price seemed right, but I really want a blue one. I checked that seller's feedback, and with the exception of someone getting a bad saw a while back......he seemed ok. So I'm glad you're telling us about him.......I'll make a note. Guys like him who sell lots of old saws don't want to be bothered checking compression or even verifying any functionality. They just want to move stuff. When you sell that many saws he knew damn well what was going on with that saw, but chose to play dumb. And you know he checked because he knows saying "it turns freely" is a selling point for the old ones. The way he figures it.........if you don't like it you won't want to spend the shipping cost to send it back, so he's accomplished his mission.....to sell another saw. And with the shipping costs being as nutty as they are now-a-days.......we all need to be aware that sending stuff back is really not an option any more, with shipping in many cases being the same or more than the price of the saw. Whenever I see a saw on eBay sitting on the tailgate of a guy's truck....with more saws in the background.......I tend to not bid. Although, to be fair, I have gotten good saws from such folks in the past. But I DO check their feedback, so make sure you ping him there. It's one area they can't fudge......we just have to be smart enough to remember to check it, which I sometimes forget.
thanks, bob

Ron,it's a model 500 like it says in the thread title. If it was an XL-500 I would've posted in another section.

I got the 500 today & had to check how "tuff it is to pull over".The seller must be a total wuss. The saw just has some good compression.I checked it for sdpark & didn't see any,but I noticed the plug wire pulled out of the boot.I'll need to address that.I put some fuel in the tank & pulled it over & it fired up & ran for about 10 sec.I also noticed a puddle of fuel in my driveway. There may be a leaking fuel line.I really didn't have much time to spend on the saw today as it was beginning to get dark.I don't think it'll take much for this saw to be a runner. I do have a question though. Is the saw supposed to have a clutch cover/drivecase cover? How do I tighten/tension the chain?
Oops,forgot the pics.

Good evening Ed. The clutch cover on the 500's often times didn't survive. I've included a couple pictures of the chain tensioner and cover off of one of mine. Hope it helps. Attachments:

Yeah,it helps Ron.I'll probably never see those parts for this saw. Did the Buz & the 500 use some of the same parts?

I would think most parts would interchange (just guessing). I have a parts buzz and 500 that I will look at tomorrow to see what's left.

I've been busy on other saws for the past couple of weeks,so I didn't have much time to get into this 500.Today I had to get into it.The plug wire kept crumbling apart every time I tried to cut off a small section & re-attach the boot & screw (this saw had a screw in the boot,no spring) .It finally got to the point where I had to pull the recoil off to get at the plug wire.Of course I had to pull the fuel & oil tank assembly off due to the super wise designers of the saw who decided to put one of the screws that holds the recoil on behind the fuel & oil tank assembly. In the process of all that handling I broke off the wire for the switch.I had to pop the flywheel & then take the coil, points,& condenser off in order to get to where the wire screwsd into the coil.A nice surprise awaited me at the coil.Someone had been in there before me trying to replace the plug wire & they didn't screw the wire into the coil. They just stuck the wire in the hole & put a big gob of epoxy all around it.I had to go with a smaller 5mm.wire that luckily I had on hand. It's screwed into that little spike & I put some clear epoxy glue around the new wire.I'll reassemble tomorrow & get some pics if I remember. The fuel & oil tanks will get new lines too.I had the saw running briefly right after I got it,but I think the plug wire was working intermittently.

I didn't get anything done with the 500 today, except look over the points to make sure they were clean. Here's a pic of the coil now that it's got a new wire & new connection on the switch wire.Whoever put a new connector on the switch wire wasn't very good at electrical. There was only about 1/8 in.stripped off the end of the wire & the connector wasn't pressed on very good.

I finally got around to putting the saw back together (almost anyway).I got the coil/points assembly back on & the flywheel & starter cup.I still need to put the plug boot back on & the fuel & oil tanks along with new lines. I got the replacement parts from a guy in Nebraska for $20 + shipping.I'll try to get those on tomorrow too.I'm hoping it'll be a runner.

Tomorrow may finally be the day that I get this beast back together. It'll depend on the weather,if it's nice I'll be out cutting,if it's crappy I'll be doing saw work.I'd planned on getting it together a couple weeks ago,but I misplaced the switch.I found the switch on my workbench among some other stuff while I was looking for yet another part.I see this saw has an odd ball carb on it.Most Tilly HL carbs can be rebuilt with a RK88 kit. This uses a RK-114.I might not need to rebuild it because I had it running briefly when I first got it,but the ignition system needed work first.
