I've got an SDC1 (I think, maybe 2) that came off one of my XL-101 saws that has a stripped out boss on the metering side for the cover.Would it be OK to helicoil it?I just need to know what size those screws are.

I don't think you can buy Helicoils that small. They only go down to a 4-40 size. Might be stuck with an oversize screw or maybe even a sheet metal screw to salvage the carb(s) if needed.

I'd rather mix up a dab of JB Weld & try that than use a sheet metal screw.I've cursed people for using wood screws & such. The guy I buy a lot of my parts from is 82 & has never used a helicoil in his life.He just drills them out a size bigger & goes that route.I asked him what he'd do when the over-sized boss becomes worn out & he can't go another size bigger. He had no answer for me.

I guess you could try buttering up that hole with JB then drill it out and try to tap it. Me? I'd probably just break a tap that small.

What I've done in the past is mix up the JB Weld & put it into the boss, then while the JB is still workable (right away is best),stick the screw in & let the JB cure around the threads.Itturns right out after curing.

Oh well if the screw will come back out then that sounds like a decent solution. I would have figured the head would twist off of the screw leaving you in an even larger predicament than before. Never heard of that, I'll try to file it in the gadgetry bank and hope I remember it if the need ever arises.
