Hi Guys, Picked up a C-5 to keep a nice original C-51 that I have company........and it has one of those green rubber grips on the handlebar. I was looking at other C-5s on the web and I don't see any 5's with the green grip. I see it on some 7's and 9's, but not 5's. Was this a feature of early saws in this series, or was it an option? I've always been amazed at how good these green grips have survived.......I have them on number of other older saws and they always look better than the rest of the saw. So anyone know the deal with the rubber grip on the C-5? thanks, bob

I'm guessing that the handle was switched at some point. All of the c-5 and c-51s that I've seen have bare aluminum handles.

Hi ronaldt, I think you're right. I found a few other pics of C-5s with rubber handles, but the brochures all show no handle on the 5 series, a black handle on the 7 series and a green handle on the 9 series. The previous owner must have been a wimp! ;0) bob

As others said that series just had painted magnesium handles

Yeah, it's aluminum. I'll help ya out Ron........here's an even more 'know it all answer' to take the heat off ya! "While other metallic alloys have multiple dislocation slip systems, enabling their well-known ductility, the hexagonal lattice of magnesium offers insufficient modes of deformation, rendering it intrinsically brittle." So it wouldn't be a very good material for a handle. And back in the day it was WAY more expensive than aluminum. Which makes me wonder if all the so-called 'magnesium castings' people claim are on these and other saws of the day are really magnesium. There's a simple way to check.......if I get some time maybe I will. Yeah, like I ever have spare time!

Yeah, that's the fun way, except it's a hard fire to put out if you don't have the right extinguisher. Other ways are to use a drop of vinegar or battery acid. Aluminum won't care..........Magnesium sure will. Silver Nitrate does the same thing too, if you have a stick in the medicine cabinet.
