I know absolutely nothing about this saw, so maybe I'm just doing something stupid.
I can get it to run for a couple of seconds if I put a splash of gas in the chamber, but other than that, it won't start. I don't see a primer bulb. Is there a fuel switch on this thing?
I have tried many combinations with switch turned on, choke in, out, and the throttle locked and unlocked. No luck.
Any ideas? I had to replace the fuel line because it had holes and cracks in it.
Thanks!

Good evening, Sounds like a new set of carb gaskets is needed to me. Replacing them is quite easy....you can get the set you need from www.mfgsupply.com. It's either a Tillotson, Walbro or Zama carb, depending on when it was manufactured....they have kits for all of them. Have fun! The SXL is probably one of the most versatile saws that were made...one of my favorites. Joe

Hi ajmcello!
These saws have no fuel shut off. The ignition switch should be on, the choke on and the throttle lock should set to the high idle position with the button on the side of the handle.
If everything is good it should run a little bit after 3-5 pulls then die, you now disengage the chokeand it should start/run.
The carb can most likely be disassembled and cleaned out with carb cleaner without the need for new gaskets, 9 times out of 10 you can get away with this if you are careful.
Your problem is most likely due to clogged fuel passages (needle and seat or carb throat) or a stuck flapper in the pump section of the carb.
Let us know how you make out.

How about pulling the muffler and checking the cylinder? Low compression can give the same symptons......Bob

Mine tends to flood when choked, a lot easier than any of my other saws. If your saw fires with fuel poured in the carb flooding is not the problem. I vote for fuel filter and line first, then carb kit.

Thanks for the responses. I ordered a carb kit for 3.99, so we'll see.
How does the carb come out? I saw there are four bolts attached to the side of the carb. Is this where I start?
Also, if I pull the muffler off, how do I check for low compression by looking at the cylinder? I did have a look, but had no idea what I was trying to find.
Thanks.

The carb comes out by removing the two hex bolts that also hold the air cleaner lid hold down bracket on. These are loong bolts so you may have to remove the carb and isolator (black plastic) as a unit.
When looking in the exhaust port you do not want to see any deep scratches on the piston or the opposing cylinder wall. Some light scratching can be overlooked.
Once you know what to feel for you can usually tell a little about the compression of a saw by the feel of the pull cord.

It runs!
I took the carb apart as you suggested, and boiled out all the crud. Overall, looked pretty clean, but something must have been caught.
Also noticed the flapper spring was rusted. Will have to replace that when I get my carb kit.
Anyhow. Will home depot or lowes have a chain for this? And also, what is the proper fuel/air ratio for the carb? I took the needles out, and haven't toyed with them yet. I was just so excited that it ran that I had to come running to my computer and let you all know of my progress!
Hopefully this $40 surplus saw serves us well.

Cool Deal! Home despot and Lowes will have a chain to fit your saw, but you might want to try a saw shop as they will be able to show you more than just the standard safety chain that the box stores will have. Your carb settings youll have to learn by ear, but a good startingpoint is one turn out from lightly seated on both the H & L screws.
