I have been using a Super XLAO to block up 5 cords of firewood each season. I believe it's about 1973 vintage. My neighbor gave me an XL 12. It has a wick fuel filter so I think that dates it to about 1963. I Tore the 12 down enough to replace the crank seals. I also cleaned and gaped the points and did a carb kit. The Super wasn't running well the last time I used it so while I was waiting for the parts for the 12 I cleaned and gaped the points on the Super.
Both saws had spark going in and both have Wico ignition. Upon reassembly the Super has no spark, 12 does. I am second guessing myself thinking maybe I switched flywheels. I swapped them and the result's the same. One flywheel is stamped "WICO THE PRESTOLITE COMPANY TOLEDO OHIO". The other "WICO DIVISION OF GLOBE UNION INC MADE IN USA". If I can figure out which flywheel predates the other I will know which one fits which saw. Both seem identical except the magnets are about an eighth of an inch taller on one but the coils are the same. Maybe the flywheels are interchangeable?? Anybody know the history of Wico??

I'm sure someone here with a 7 digit 1960's XL-12 can take a look at their saw and see what's casts on theirs. I would but I don't own one, don't care for a manual oiler only model.

The Wico flywheels will work interchangeably. The Globe Union flywheel is the older of the two. On the no spark model, try cleaning the points. There's likely a little smidge of grease or oil that made it's way in there on reassembly.

Secondary coil test showed infinite resistance from spark plug boot to coil. I pulled the boot off and the wire out of the coil. Nipped a bit off each end and reinstalled. That fixed that problem but still no spark.
The resistance across the points was the same, open or closed. I filed the points with a diamond nail file I use to sharpen fish hooks. IT'S ALIVE. Good spark now. Thanks for the help.
Time for lunch and a nap.
