In my quest to find and learn more about XL tools, I am currently focused in on the XLS pumps. I have asked around and there does not seem to be much in the way of understanding, regarding the models available and the differences between them. I am hoping to land one of each of the primary variations, and I think so far, I have nabbed two. Here are the models I am aware of, some thoughts/assumptions, and the model differences.
XLS 1 1/2-1 XLS 1 1/2-1A XLS 1 1/2-2A The '1' designation pumps have no auxilliary fuel tank, and use the powerhead tank. Interestingly, it appears that even into the '70's, these retained the wick filter design, after the chainsaws shifted away from that. I do not know yet what changed for the '2A'.
XLS 1 1/2-4 XLS 1 1/2-4A The '4' designation pumps saw the addition of the longer run time, auxillary fuel tank.
XLS 2-1A XLS 2-1B I have not seen an 'A' IPL to understand the difference between the 2-1A and 2-1B yet, but would love to.
'A' designation 1-1/2 unnits have several differences, most notably, and 'A'djustable throttle. I beleive that is what 'A' indicates. Also, the A units add a fuel tank gasket (non-A were cemented), and a different crankshaft, connecting rod and rollers. Perhaps these accomodated a different RPM range? Also, 'A' units had the addition of the spring suspension skids.
1-1/2 and 2 within the model numbers inidcate the pump displacement size. The XLS 1-1/2 used the XL12 powerhead, rated at 2.6hp (25lbs), while the XLS2 used the 925 powerhead, rated at 4.5hp (40lbs). *per the '82 catalog
