Working on a Super XL. It has the Tillotson HS-179A carburetor. Cutting trees the other day and the saw just quit. Tried to restart and fuel started draining out the air box onto the muffler. Checked the fuel line for cracks. Nothing, looks new. I pulled the carb but everything looks good. Can a Tillotson be pressure tested like a Walbro HDC? All rebuild kits say they are for the HS-178B. Will a kit for a B fit an A carb? Love this saw. Any info would be awesome. Thanks!

RK17HS for 179b. I think RK17 & RK23 are the same though… You can definitely pressure test a HS carburetor if you have a pressure tester. HS carburetors do not have a check valve like the HDC but the needle and gaskets can be tested for leaks. Sounds like your needle may be the problem? tillotson.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/HS-Repair-Kits.pdf

You are correct! First time into a Tillotson. I found that the diaphragm was not hooked to the metering lever. It was sitting on the outside of it. That caused the needle to stay open. I don't know if it was like that or it came out while I was using it. It's an eBay saw. I still had some leak off so I stretched the spring a tad with good results. I'm going to finish it up tomorrow after shoveling. Only thing I need to do is adjust the carburetor. Thanks so much for your assistance. Greatly appreciated!
