Hello! I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the compatibility between a clutch cover from say, is 701 or 902, and the later 925? Was there a change in the cover somewhere along the way that would prevent me from using a newer NOS part on an earlier saw?
When looking at the IPL’s, the answer seems to be no, but I do realize some later part numbers are matches to earlier ones.
Also, the 98 multipurpose cover looks like it may match the 925. Is that an option for an earlier saw? I am in need of blue ones, green ones, red ones… And I am OK painting what I need to, but I don’t want to spend money on parts that won’t fit.
Thanks!!

The stud spacing is different I'm afraid...XL-700 to XL-904 will interchange, but the XL-921 to XL-925 added ~1/4" of center to center distance on the stud spacing. The XL-98 cover would bolt up to a 925, but it wouldn't provide nearly as much coverage as the proper cover. Unfortunately those early covers are especially hard to come by!

Could a fella who is relatively handy change that hole spacing and have a cover that fits as it should? I have enough busted magnesium around here now, that I am going to try my hand at welding it. If that goes well, I have 2 cracked 700/800 style covers that need mending. But moving holes in a 925 cover may have to be an option just to have enough covers!

I have welded a case, real pita, the actual welding of it is pretty much the same as tig welding aluminum. Which if you are going to try magnesium make sure you are proficient at tig welding light aluminum first, also old homelite casting get real dirty and you really have to get out all the oil that has leached into thr pores of the metal, also crank the argon to at least 25cu.ft/min
Also the fill rod is not easiest thing to find and least not from the welding suppliers we use, they did bring some in for me but had to wait a month and was jaw dropping expensive(160$/1lb), and rod isn't stored properly it will oxidized and turn to garbage after a month.
If you really want to try, hope it goes well, but me personally I would just find the right clutch cover..

Finding a (decent) cover is probably going to require buying a donor saw it seems.
I did learn today that the 921 uses the 925 style cover, so that is a win. I have a cover and will get it painted up. My 601 and 902Am are in desperate need tho…
