Back in July I worked on an XL-101 that I'd had laying around for about 3 1/2 yrs.I put a different throttle handle on it that I got from Leon to eliminate the epoxied oil tank cover, put in a good used carb, new points & condenser, new fuel line & filter. The saw fired right up after I fueled it up,but leaked it out like a seive. There was a bead of JB Weld on the bottom of the saw where it splits in half & one of the screws is broken off that holds the 2 halves together.I believe the screw is broken off flush with the other half as I remember. The way the saw was "designed",I'd have to take the saw apart including the engine to put a new gasket in to stop the leak, but I don't think there's any way to remove the broken screw. The screws are specially hardened & no way in Creation it can be drilled out.I've been watching Feebay since last summer for another 101,but the days of cheap saws on Feebay are a thing of the past.

Ed,
Clean the tank out with Acetone and use some Red Kote tank sealer.
The gasket that's there shouldn't be an issue with the Red Kote over top.
I think you may have some already?

I can try the Red Kote thing,BUT....Red Kote is for use on small pin hole type leaks. The fuel just POURED out of the bottom of the saw like it was the Grand Canyon. The JB Weld should've at least slowed it down, but it didn't.

The black "stuff" that goes down the seam of the saw isn't JB Weld like I thought.I touched it with a screwdriver & it flaked right off.It was some ancient attempt with some ancient goo that just didn't seal anything.I'm going to attempt Red Kote & see what happens. Here's a pic of the bead of black "goo".

Nothing to lose and all to gain really. Like fossil said, a good wash out and giver a try!
Good luck

I just finished with the Red Kote & surprisingly not a drop came out of the seam. Now I'll wait a few days for it to cure & see if it worked.I think it has an extra thick layer on the bottom, but that's where it's needed. The wood heat should hurry the cure time a bit.I've had both success & no success with Red Kote,so we'll see what happens.

I let the saw set with the Red Kote in the tank in the house where it's warm & toasty for the better part of a week.I put fuel in the tank earlier & it didn't pour out like it did previously! If there's any leak at all it's not even noticeable.I'll go check after I post this, but I think I'll need to replace the fuel line again.I left the fuel line in the saw & plugged it off with a bolt, but the bolt fell out during the process & Red Kote got in the line.Rather than take a chance of that stuff getting sucked into the carb & fouling it all up,I'll just redo the line again.I didn't exactly like the way the line fit in the tank anyway. The carb has a large barb on it,so I had to use a bigger size fuel line, but when it came time for the bigger size line to go into the grommet for the tank it was a no go. I just deleted the grommet, but I know it'll leak there if I don't address it.Any ideas are welcome.

I checked to see if any fuel had leaked & it was dry as a bone on the underside of the saw.Mission accomplished! The way the fuel poured out of the saw last summer,I didn't think it was possible that the Red Kote would've ever sealed it.Thanks Tim!
Now it's on to the fuel line.

Glad the red Kote worked. It's stout stuff. For the fuel line, go back to the size for the grommet and gently heat the fuel line for a bit until it's soft. It will generally go over the carb barb without too much trouble. I do that for the MAC SDC's on the 10 series which have large barbs using 1/4" OD X 1/8" ID tygon line.

It's only been about 2 1/2 mo.since I last posted here on this project.I just finished up on the XL-113 & it "got me in the mood" to get back to this saw.The fuel I put in it back in Nov.is still in it.I got some new Tygon 1/8 ID x 1/4OD that I used on the XL-113,so it should work on this 101.
If that turns out to be a success,I'll move on to another XL-101 that I picked up a couple of months ago. That saw had spark & fired on a prime, but needs a new fuel line & filter,& a possible carb rebuild to begin with.I also need to change the throttle handle because it has the dreaded epoxied oil tank. Now this saw is going to be unique.Have you ever seen an almost totally red 101?Someone at one time changed out the fuel tank portion of the saw most likely because it got stuck in a pinch & the operator tried to get it out by wiggling it from side to side. That causes the gasket in between the fuel tank halves to separate & have a big fuel leak. The throttle handle I got is from either a 103 or 104,which is red.I should probably start a new thread for the unique red 101.

So much for the tank not leaking.I put a new line & filter in it & put fuel in it.It started on a few pulls & I let it set & went to have lunch. When I came back out the bottom of the saw was wet,but not pouring out like it did last summer. The saw runs great & I found a 16 in.bar & chain for it.I dumped out the fuel & I'll wait a few days for it to dry out.I'll give it another coaty of Red Kote & hope for the best.

Hard to believe it's been over a week since I got the saw prepped.I've been busy with other saws & just forgot about Red Koting it.I finally remembered to do it today.I'll wait about a week before I fuel it up again to see if the 2nd coat worked.

I brought the saw in the house where it's warmer to hasten the drying process. It's been almost a week since I did the 2nd coat of Red Kote.I took it back out to the garage today & put fuel in it.I checked it about a half hr.later & it was dry.I'll check again tonight before bed & again in the a.m.If no leaks I'll put the fuel line & filter back in & fire it up again - weather providing.

Finally no leaky fuel tank! I checked it today & it was dry as a bone.I put the fuel line & filter back in & fired it up.It seems to have a miss in the ignition, could be a plug breaking down.It also is acting like it needs crank seals now.I just can't seem to catch a break on these 101s.I had to turn the idle screw out all the way & the lo screw out 3 1/4 turns to get it to idle down.

Some of these have some difficult problems to solve! Glad you have a sealed up tank and appears you'll have several more things to keep up your hobby interests! Stay at it-Always interested in experiences by members here they are valuable for all of us.
On a worse note- You now won't be able to send it to Ukraine for use as a Molotov tank kill!
