I am getting back to putting the XL2 I asked about a couple of weeks ago back together. When I got it, I noticed that the thrust washer and retainer were missing from the clutch. I have various random thrust washers lying around, but I'm wondering about the thickness and diameter of the original washer (part 69138 or 95299). There is a bit of play between what I'm using and the retaining clip. It also looks like my random 3/8" snap ring might be narrower than the groove in the crank, so that's not helping anything.
What is the appropriate fit here? Doesn't seem too critical other than the washer free-spinning at shutdown.

The thickest washer that you can install with everything remaining loose enough to spin freely is going to be ok. Sometimes these saws had plenty of slack with all the correct parts installed. I've seen some with 2 washers outside the sprocket. In that case, if you have room for 2, put one one each side of the sprocket.
The groove on your XL2 is likely wider because that saw came out with a thicker snap ring without ears that could be a real rip to get off. The sprocket kits have came with a narrower snap ring with ears for normal snap ring pliers for many years now. It doesn't hurt anything, it just won't fill up the slot.

Thank you--I appreciate the reply and advice. I have a thin washer that I will add to take up some of the play. You recommend adding the second washer between the drum and the clutch? I guess it won't shift the clutch out of the drum by enough to make a difference.

Yes, if you have room for an extra, between the clutch and drum is probably best. That should keep your chain more near the center of the drive spur.
