I have a Super XL AO that is my day to day saw. A neighbor gave me an XL12. It seems to be a fairly early one. Serial number 1536254. The cover that comes off when you take the bar off proclaims the saw to be the "worlds lightest direct-drive chain saw". There are several differences between the saws. The muffler on the XL12 is small, about the size of a matchbox. The attachment between the spark plug and the boot on the wire is different too.
The plug is a Champion TJ6J. I found some on Ebay for $35 each. Exorbitant. I have some DJ6J plugs on hand for the Super. Will they fit if I change the boot on the end of the wire?
How do I change the boot so it fits the newer plugs? Do I have to replace the coil to accomplish this? .

You should be able to just replace the plug wire. As far as sparkplugs themselves I usually swap with a CJ8 and haven't had any problems. The big old saws I have a dozen of their plugs in stock from scrap saws.

Change the plug wire terminal to the new style and run a CJ6 plug. The old Homelite part number for the new style terminal and boot is 33055 if I recall correctly. It's just a spring type terminal and rubber boot to fit. You can just pull one off a donor saw if you have some parts saws.
And the DJ6J plugs are not the correct plug for your Super XL. You can probably get by with it but they're a taper seat plug and the SXL's came with a washer seat plug. Should be a CJ6.

Blythkd is spot on...you'll eventually screw up the threads if you use a tapered seat plug. A lot of guys run a CJ-8, but that is two heat ranges hotter than the factory CJ-6. I won't do it because where I live temps reach 100 on a fairly regular basis; the saw doesn't need any extra heat!

Oops, I just replaced the plug in the super with what was in it when I salvaged it from the dumpster. CJ6 on order.
A CJ8 is listed as the correct plug for the XL12. Nuts, I hoped both saws would use the same plug.
Thanks for the help.
