I'm looking for an old horizontal shaft 8HP Briggs engine with the camshaft drive in addition to the normal crankshaft drive. It's for an old tiller that has reverse drive. It's a big heavy tiller and the reverse feature makes it much easier to turn corners at the end of the garden. Actually my current engine is pretty well shot and I'm looking to replace it with a similar engine. It doesn't have to be perfect just in running condition and not worn out.

Brent,if it's a Troy Built it might be worth it to put a new engine on it.I've had very good luck dealing with this outfit: www.smallenginewarehouse.com/Repower-Old-Equipment/From what I understand with the reverse feature you definitely need that extra cam shaft that runs the reverse gear.However,you must take some of the parts off your old tiller's engine & transfer them over to the new engine.With my Pony model the difference in the price for having reverse or no reverse was about $200.Since my Pony is much lighter than the higher HP models,I can just swing or drag the tiller where I need it,but yours is much heavier & not so easy to do that.The above co.had some original engines that were made for the Troy Built tillers back in thye day,I have no idea if they have any left. |

The tiller than needs an engine is an Allis Chalmers and I would definitely like to have it running again. It would always tear up ground like no other tiller I'd ever seen.
My Pony is easy to turn too. The powered drive tires make it easy, just lift up on the rear and spin it around. The 8HP Allis is a front tine and it's not as easily turned. I always used the reverse to back up and turn corners as it backed up slowly and made it easy to spin it around.

I don't believe Allis made their own tillers,just like Sears never made their own tillers,or chainsaws.If you did some research on it I'll betcha a dollar to doughnuts that someone made it for Allis.Regardless,I know what you're sayin' about having the reverse going real slow to make turning around a snap.If you get a used engine you don't really know what you're getting.If you go with a new engine you'll most likely never have to replace it again for the rest of your life.

Yeah I'd be surprised if it was built by Allis, it's just orange and white and says Allis Chalmers on it.
I'd buy a new engine if I could find one that would bolt up and work.

I have a Simplicity built Homelite garden tractor and an Allis tiller for it. The same Homelite dealer than I used to work for was also a Simplicity dealer. We worked on tractor type tillers that were built by Simplicity as far as I know but walk behind tillers never crossed my mind. I'm not sure I ever saw one. Maybe I own one! |

Did you check out the link I sent you to Small Engine Warehouse?They have just about every name brand tiller or other equipment listed by mfr.I just went to the web site & the first thing listed was Allis Chalmers.I don't know if their listings were for tractors or other.A simple phone call will tell you if they have what you need.

I checked it out but didn't find my tiller. I'm all but certain that style of engine isn't built any more and I'm not aware of anything that replaced it as far as having both shaft drives, same diameter, same dimension above the mounting base, etc. I could be wrong but I just assumed I'll have to find an old style engine in running condition. Either that or pull mine apart and attempt to freshen it up. It's just that results with rebuilding aluminum engines haven't been that great. I guess I could pull it apart and check the bore. Maybe the rings are just shot and the bore is still usable.

8hp might have an iron sleeve in it.
You might also be able to swap the parts for the second shaft into a different engine. I am pretty sure the block is the same, just the side cover and shaft related internals are different. That is the way it was on some 5 hp 2 shaft engines I have seen.

I had the head off several years ago and did valve guides. I'm pretty sure it's just an aluminum bore. It had crossed my mind to swap my cam and side cover over to a better engine, just hadn't pursued it. If I can come up with a good single shaft engine, that might just have to be the way I go. That's if my side cover is in good condition.
