Hi folks,I usually don't post here because I don't particularly care to work on the smaller saws, but I guess there's an exception to everything,Lol.My neighbor stopped by today while I was working on a saw,as usual,& he announced that he bought a small Homelite saw.I told him to bring it by & I'd have a look at it.I assumed it was a points & condenser saw,but after I pulled the flywheel I found it had an ignition module on it.The saw had no spark, hence the pulling of the flywheel.I told my neighbor that his saw needed a new ignition module & I could most likely pick opne up for about $15 on Feebay..I did in fact find some for less than that.I asked my neighbor how much he paid for his saw & he said between $25 & $30.The saw doesn't feel like it has that much compression.IMO I think my neighbor got ripped off.The UT# 10655 & serial # 7H1400508.

I managed to get 2 modules on Feebay for $24.I bought 2 because I have a couple of XLs myself that don't have any spark.I don't know, was this a common failure on the XL & XL2,ignition module failure?

The Phelon electronic modules definitely failed at a higher rate than the points coils. The compression never felt high on those saws to begin with, but if you put a gauge on it, I'd bet it hits 125, which in that model will do the trick.

I got my neighbor's XL running today.I went in my shed & found several XLs.I found several that had spark & pulled the module off one & swapped it over onto his saw.I had to put a fuel filter in as the one that was supposed to be on the saw wasn't on it,it kinda fell in half in the fuel tank. After the new filter was put on I fueled up the saw & it fired up.Unfortunately it needs crank seals.I told him I'd give it a shot this winter. Now if he'd have come to me to begin with to buy a saw he wouldn't be looking at all these problems & money spent on repairs. I found a real nice XL that just had a broken throttle handle cover.I'm sure I can find one on a Super 2 that'll fit right over on it.Here's a couple pics of my neighbor's XL.

Looks like a low use saw. Usually the muffler is worn or bent. Not on this one.

Then all the XLs I have are low hr.saws.I pull the mufflers off to check the piston & cylinders on most every saw I work on.If there's scoring I usually don't proceed any further. There are exceptions to the rule though,a well sought after or collectible saw I go the extra mile.

I've got some of them little top handle Homie saws that are good for trimming, but from my own experience if a guy cannot repair them kind of saws himself he needs to get a more reliable type better saw. I also keep some of them close by as donor saws for parts that came out of junk piles. (parts are pricy and hard to find now days) (unless he is lucky enough to have a neighbor/friend that will repair them for him dirt cheap)
If I had such a chainsaw repair friend I would let him work on mine instead of me wrestling with them myself.

Those little saws are still pretty handy and typically fairly reliable. It's rare to find one burnt up. I wish I knew how many of those little XL's and Super 2's I put back on the road with just a carb kit.
My son and I just worked on a couple of them recently so we'd have something lighter than a 360 for trimming.
Seems like the worst issue anymore is coming up with an oiler plunger/diaphragm if you need one. One of the XL's we just worked on is an old plastic case model with the pressurized tank oiler system so it should last us for some time.
Ed, to save you some time, if that electronic ignition module doesn't jump out at you, next time look for the wire coming out from under the flywheel going to the coil. Also, any XL with the long back handle like a Super 2 is a plastic case model with electronic ignition.
Keep it up, any Homie brought back to life is a good Homie!

blythkd or any others with info, I have an old Super 2 with the long handle, 2 triggers, metal switch type for on/off (not plastic rocker) and mag case. It also has a wire coming out from behind the flywheel that goes to the coil. To save me from pulling the flywheel, is this points with condenser or electronic ignition?

That is a points ignition model.

Mine has a defective kill switch, hate to spend over $15 + shipping for a used one. Just disconnected it. Duane

Guy needs at least 2, 3 is even better as parts saws. Guy can have more in one than they are worth if he has to chase and buy one at a time parts, especially if have to buy a chain and bar plus other stuff.
Really have to be careful on those, lots of parts are different and used parts getting expensive. Even a gas/oil cap or a cork seal, duckbills, etc.
They need little bit of TLC from the owner. A guy mentioned above about compression. I've seen them types start/run and cut good on 80psi compression. I've seen people blame low compression for weak runners when they have fuel/carb problems.
