I just picked this C series saw up today for $45 from a local CL ad.Originally the seller wanted $50,but I got him down $5 (I'm cheap,Lol).I got it home & pulled the plug & put some fuel in,gave it a pull & it fired up.It doesn't have an ID tag on it,buit I'm leaning towards a C-91.If anyone has any other ideas please post. It'll need a good cleaning to remove exterior crud & I think the fuel line in the tank has fallen off,no biggie.

Great looking saw Ed. I have always liked the paint colors on those.

I'm 99% sure that's a C-91. Does it have a tiny external idle adjustment screw on the back of the air box?

I can't say for sure Ron,I'll have to take a look tomorrow.I didn't have time to go through it completely because I had to can tomatoes.Tomorrow I'll make hot sauce & then I'll have a look.I say ity looks to be a C-91 because it looks exactly like the one I got from Jarhead, only this one is covered in grime. Charles, you say you aslways liked the colors. What colors?Lol There's so much paint loss on this saw that I actually feel sorry for it.Maybe after I clean the grime off it'll show up it's colors better,or more paint will come off,Lol.

Great deal! Yep, everything on the outside sure looks like a 91. The overrunning bearing starter is the big difference between the 9 and and the 91. I've noticed at least 2 styles of starter covers on these. Some are smooth and rounded on the edge like yours and some have a small ridge around the edge. Hopefully this makes sense, if not I'll try to get a pic. I'm still not sure if the ones with ridges are really correct. the xp1000, 1100 early 1020s and maybe even the very early 1130s (could be wrong here) used the overrunning bearing starter too, and it may be Homelite changed the style at some point. Anyway, both styles fit. Apologies for rambling... 91s are one of my favorite saws of all time.

Measurement of the bore will confirm a C-91 engine.

Measurement will confirm it's either a C-9 or a C-91.

Nice score Ed. The C series is definitely one of my favourite models. The 9/91 are a bit less common. Gotta love any of the Green/Red saws though in my opinion!

Check the starter for a FM or over running bearing then the bore.

I got after the C-91 a bit today.Yes Ron,it has the idle adjustment screw on the back by the switch.I put a new fuel filter on,it was missing the old one.I put a little WD40 on a rag & wiped off the grime, what a difference!I took the recoil off & it was missing a screw, lubed the bearti ng in the overrunning bearing. It was unusually clean in there,I think the saw was well taken care of.I put fuel in the tank & got it fired up in a few pulls. It had a hard time idling. The chain was loose,so I fiddled with that for a while & the diaphragms must've needed a little time to get soaked up,I fired the saw up again & it runs great, but the chain just keeps on running,it probably needs the bearing to be lubed a bit.The chain is practically brand new.I had to take the muffler off & will replace ther screws that held it on with studs & an air deflector,& a new cap.The muffler body will last a bit longer. While the muffler was off I had a look at the P&C & they look real good,no scoring at all. This saw was definitely well cared for.

I did manage to get a little time in with thgis saw today.I put the new muffler parts on & it definitely looks much nicer.I also pulled the clutch drum off & lubed the bearing,it was definitely dry,but after I got it back together the chain still wants to run continuously. The outer spring on the clutch wasn't broken & the shoes all looked good. The inner spring must be broken.I've got to look around to see if I casn find my 2 pin clutch removal tool.

I cleaned off the dirt & grime with some WD40 on a rag, what a difference! Trying to figure out which way the clutch comes off,RH thread,or LH thread?Either the bearing is really dry,or it has a broken inner spring because the chain just keeps a spinning.

I'm thinking the clutch should be reverse threaded, turn clockwise to loosen

This clutch is being a real SOB.I found the 2 pronged "clutch removal tool" which IMO is a jioke. The prongs that are supposed to insert into the holes in the clutch only go in about 1/8-3/16 in.This isn't long enough to work effectively. The tool keeps slipping out of the holes when force is applied. The last time I took a clutch off a C series was on a parts C5 I got for free.I had to break the clutch off in pieces because the "person" who owened it previously left it out in the elements for about 10 yrs.& everything was seized. This one is a close 2nd.I'd forgotten that I greased the bearing about a week ago & the only thing left is the inside spring that'd cause the chain to run continuously.I don't want to use heat due to the crank seal being right there.

After messing with trying to get the clutch off for over an hr.I just said screw it & put it back together. If it wants to run continuously, let it.Then it camer time to put the bar & chain back on,that was another joke.I changed drivecase covers with a C9 & it still wouldn't tighten the chain.I finally put the longer bar & chain on from the C9 & all is good (except for stupid clutch). Here are some pics since I cleaned it up,changed the muffler cap,& put on a different bar & chain.
