That one was built on August 4, 1992. My "old blue" is a 1997. I don't know if they made blue xlao's in the years in between or not. I've got a couple big red edition xlao's that I think are 1994 models.

They built the new and improved blue editions at different times, not a continual production run. Seems like the first "Ol Blue" came out in the late 80's or early 90's but not sure. They dropped it then came out with another version a few years later. I'm not sure how many different times Homelite offered it but I'm thinking at least 3 different times. So it's hard to nail down how many years it was produced.

We're they "new and improved" or was it a marketing idea to sell saws?

I just meant "new and improved" blue SXL's as opposed to the blue saws of the 1960's.
No, the new "Ol Blue's" were just the same SXL as the red ones except with different paint and graphics.
I think they were popular so Homelite just used them for a sales throttle. When red sales started slacking, they'd pull the trigger on the blue models again for awhile to stimulate sales. Just my opinion, you know what's that worth.

From what I've seen of serial numbers on these saws, it appears these special version appeared in 1992 and continued until the line was discontinued in 1998 or 1999.
