My son bought a 550 basket case a while back. It turned out to be short a few parts so he started collecting pieces. He bought a carb, spikes, ignition receptacle and I had the lower brace. We started to put it together a while back and the crankshaft end play was off the chart. So I pulled the block apart and didn't see anything wrong. Then we lost traction on the project.
This morning I got it all back out and starting looking at it. I loose assembled the block and crank again and decided that someone must have been in it before and didn't get one of the bearing retainer snap rings in the groove. I put it together and it was fine.
So this afternoon after my son showed up we started working on it. First thing I noticed was there was no flywheel. I had a new flywheel so I donated that to the project, among many other little trinkets. Then he kept shagging parts while I worked. That thing must have been short 3/4 of the screws. After we'd rounded up numerous parts I asked if he wondered when we'd run into something we didn't have. He said, yeah. We ended up getting it all together except for mounting the carb. There were no screws...and we couldn't find any. So there it sits, all done except for the carb screws. It's not a bad looking saw and the internals looked really good. May end up donating an ignition transformer too. We'll see.
I bet we screwed with that thing for 3-4 hours this afternoon and it's still not done. I hope it turns out good. I'll post the up date and a picture when it's done. It'll be another one revived from the bone pile.
