Hello all,I've got a SXL-922 that has a badly scored piston that needs to be replaced.I bought a LRB piston kit not knowing it was a LRB kit,it was listed as a "Homelite" piston & it came from a seller in Canada,so sending it back wasn't worth the effort.Anyway,I found the kit has no clips to hold the wrist pin in place (the pin fits very loosely,I can move it to & fro by hand).Did Homelite sell just the clips? Can I reuse the old clips without a problem?Should I just chuck this piston kit in the trash & get a new one with clips?

I did find that Homelite made replacement clips, they're called "Piston Pin Retaining Rings".I have 2 on the way. I pulled the 922 apart today & it was a real mess. The piston is scored beyond bringing it back, but this is something I can't understand - the cylinder is good, scoring is slight & I believe I can save the cylinder by sanding.I also don't understand how the piston got so scored. The rings are stuck in place.I'll get some pics of the damage on here tomorrow.

If it's scored all around it was likely straight gassed.

Yes Tim,the piston is scored all around, but the cylinder is virtually untouched.

Cylinders don't usually get destroyed unless something hard goes up like those crappy Homelite circlips or some chrome flakes off.
Chrome is very hard and the aluminum piston is soft.

Now I've run into another problem. The muffler gasket was broke in half when I took the muffler off.I've searched high & low for a replacement & it seems there are none outy there anywhere. It also looks like the 922 was the only odd ball model in the 900 series that used a muffler gasket.I looked at the 921,923,924,& 925 IPLs & none of those saws have a muffler gasket. The 902 used the same gasket. It looks like the Terry made saws used the gasket & the U.S.made saws did not.

Yeah,that's the one,but I'm not paying $9 for a muffler gasket.I called my parts guy Bob & I got 2 for $8.Thanks for your help,much appreciated!

I went to take the piston off the conn rod & found there were no clips. All I had to do was drive the pin out,it was a tight fit right to the very end.The new piston that's going back in will have clips though.Even if the piston is not supposed to have clips in it because the pin fits too loose - a LRB specialty.

I'm having trouble getting the coil bracket off the saw.I pulled the 3 bolts out that hold it in place by the points box & it moved very little.Usually once those 3 bolts/screws are out the stator assembly just lifts right off. What am I doing/not doing? It was quite the PITA to get the old piston off the conn rod.I don't want to have to wrestle with that bracket when I'm trying to put the new piston in.I'd also like to have a look at the points.

If I am remembering correctly the coil bracket and backing plate for those saws are pressed in similar to the XL-130 & 76. Sealed with an o-ring or gasket. If you don’t really need to remove it don’t bother. Maybe post a pic of your points bracket.. This is how I put the piston & connecting rod on a saw. Works without the backing plate off. youtu.be/DBpj5klbcdU

Thanks Trevor, that's all well & good if I was taking the conn rod off the crankshaft, but I just popped the wrist pin out of the piston & will replace it with a new piston. The bearings on the conn rod would be all over the place & of course I'd manage to lose at least one. What I've done with the other piston I replaced was the same,I put grease in the conn rod bearings to hold them in place. Then I take the pin & tap it into the piston & have it come through just enough so that the conn rod clears, then tap the pin through the rest of the way. Finally the clips go in.I guess I'll just have to work around the bracket, although it will be a PITA.I realized after I'd posted & took another look at the IPL that the seal was pressed into that bracket. The saw had spark when I first got it,so hopefully it'll have spark when I'm finished.I'd post pics, but the saw is really dirty.I'll clean it up first & then take some pics.I can't really do much anyway till my parts come in & that might take a while.

I've decided to use an OEM Homelite piston kit rather than the LRB kit that I bought back in April.I've got a friend over on AS who used a LRB piston kit in his Mac saw & the pin backed out enough to let the needles come out of the piston (the Macs don't use clips, they're pressed in & are very tight). The end result was his saw was totally ruined. The pin on the LRB piston slides in & out of the piston too easily on the piston for the 922.I picked up a piston kit for the 922 for $35 + $5 shipping, which I thought was a pretty good deal.In good conscience I couldn't even give the LRB kit to anyone.Chalk it up as experience I guess.

Today I cleaned up the 922 under the flywheel area getting it clean for the rebuild.I had some Simple Green laying around & used that,it worked pretty good.Next I decided to check out the reeds in light of what had happened with my XL-103.It's a good thing I did because there was a lot of crud under the reed cage gasket.I'll bet I must've gotten 1 1/2 tsp.of fine sawdust & oil out of the reed area. All I need now are the gaskets & I'll be ready to reassemble.
